In the Doctor Who episode The Impossible Planet, the Doctor and Rose find themselves on a planet that is emitting a "gravity beam" while orbiting a black hole. ( more madness )

I agree with Jerry. And also, a wizard did it.

WIZARD!

Remeber, it was the "Devil" that kept in in orbit... when he left, it all went to hell...hehe....

Annnnd how boring would it be to look at a black dot for 50 minutes? :P hehehe Come on now, gotta make it look good hehe

Plus, your a Trekie... starship sounds in space? hmmmm? ;P~

Ok, gonna hide now...

TARDIS, bigger on the inside.... *hides*

Okay, we apologize for the explosions in space -- but didn't we stop those after Original Series? Next Generation didn't have them, I don't think. At least we had the decency to invent techno babble for our ridiculous things. The Doctor was inventing impossibles that were just plain old possible and not a big deal at all. Gravity beam, indeed.

But, but, the Devil... he did it! Pure evil could create a gravitational "beam"? Right?...Right? hehehe

And yes, Next Gen had "space sounds"... each shot of the "D" cruising by had that rumbling sound. I just chalked that up to the distortion of space that the warp drives caused (or Shatners ego bending space-time.). ;) hehe But the Borg cutting beam, photon/quantum torpedoes, phasers... etc etc... well.. ;)

Keep in mind too, Doctor Who is a kids show. Dont want little Billy or Suzy's head exploding from all the techno-babble ;)

Now if you havnt seen the rest of the episodes after this one...well... lets just say yer head is gonna explode ;)

Not spoiling anything, all I'm gonna say is two words... "reality bomb"

In the area of "who is this strange person, and why should I care what he's saying?"... I hopped a link here from your OKCupid profile. Take that as you will.

Aaaanyway... your first point is both right and wrong. Yes, you can't see a black hole. But what we're actually seeing in this episode is the accretion disc around the black hole. Though the existence of the accretion disc just highlights your other points. :P

Cool, cool. Oh, and now that I stop and look at dates, my apologies for replying to an old post.

Is it weird that I'm now trying to think of whether they've got the color of the accretion disc wrong when there are so many other problems with the show's science?
