✢ The Character
Character Name: Zagreus
Fandom: Doctor Who, Big Finish Audioverse
Canon Point: Taken from eponymous audio.
Age: I'll be kind and say 800ish?
Appearance: Just like the Eighth Doctor. So, not tall, collar-lengthish brown hair in curls, blue eyes, Englishly pale skin, medium build. Fancy dress take on Victorian clothing: velvet frock coat in dark colours, patterned waistcoat, grey silk cravat, khaki coloured pants, black shoes. Like so. Physiologically pretty much a Time Lord. But only "pretty much"? See more below.
Abilities / Powers: Zagreus has "Time Lord" powers as established throughout Doctor Who canon (though I'm not going to pull out any sort of "can excrete radiation through his feet" one-offs as a general rule), in addition to those granted by being a psychically predatory creature of antitime. Time Lords are sturdier and more resilient than humans, have two hearts (and can function with only one), can communicate telepathically with creatures for whom that is possible/normal, and can enter minds/communicate mind-to-mind, etc via touch for creatures (such as humans) for whom that is NOT the usual method of communication. They're possessed of a stronger resistance to cold and heat than is standard for humans, and don't need as much sleep or food. Their senses are a bit sharper than human normal, better night vision, able to taste/smell things with greater accuracy, improved hearing range, etc. It's unknown whether Zagreus could regenerate, but I'd say not; the question is raised in canon, sort of, but not settled. For the specifics of Time Lord/Gallifreyan physiology, I'm using
this as reference but anything especially obscure or unlikely to be relevant (an extra brain lobe devoted to bodily functions? C'mon.) I'm probably not going to bring up or rely on.
Specific to having been the Doctor, he may recognise companions from his time or before, though with his mind being such a mess it could take awhile, and he would have some general Who-verse knowledge (will not try to use a dalek to make espresso).
Antitime, being a corruptive, infectious element, means he can have a very deleterious effect on a person's sanity and well-being, should he be allowed access to someone's mind via touch. Time-sensitive beings (Time Lords, their ships, etc) will be put off by him, and the generally psychic won't think much of his nasty feel. With conscious effort or emotional upset to draw on he can ramp up that nastiness, but this is again partially dependent on the nature of his target; a human probably would not feel anything, maybe a vague barometric pressure headache at best. Has been known to re-write personalities and just generally be a corruptive nuisance, but that kind of infection does require touch and isn't instantaneous, and can be undone.
In terms of physical abilities, nothing notable. A bit stronger and quicker than an untrained human, no weapons proficiencies or martial arts. Has a pretty good understanding of how to hurt things, will target obvious weaknesses even in a violent rage, but would not be any better with a sword or a gun than any random person would be.
Inventory: Dumb Time Lord dimensionally-transcendental pockets, full of junk like lint-speckled candy, marbles, fortune-cookie papers, a ball of string, the odd writing utensil, a spoon. Coins, but not from anywhere recognisable or in any quantity. Nothing of any consequence stored here, no weapons, usable cash, timepieces, identification (psychic paper wasn't a thing), or sonic screwdriver. Basically just has pocket trash, would have to acquire anything specifically useful (and he will--bit of a hoarder). Does have a phone. TARDIS unaccounted for, but oh well, they never got on anyway.
Personality: Antitime is a force for destruction and chaos, unnatural to this universe and, given sentience (as in this case) pretty vehemently opposed to it and order in general. Canon-Zagreus is unstable, violent, and looking to make trouble on an apocalyptic scale, stating a desire to 'ravage the cosmos' etc. Post-canon Zagreus is much the same, though more stable minus the Doctor's personality fighting for control and other detrimental circumstantial influences. Despite his virulently antithetical to reality nature, he's a bit useless at actually causing any kind of large-scale destruction. Too self-absorbed, too easily distracted, too lacking in any kind of planning or forethought.
He's honestly not very bright, though he can pull literary references out of his head until the world ends and pick apart the motives and feelings of other people with occasionally disturbing accuracy. He's opportunistic to a fault, will grab at the chance to cause harm or get something he wants even at his own risk or expense, and routinely underestimates his opponents or loses interest in fights. Also curious to a fault, he will stick his nose into anything, no matter how ill-advised. Can't stand not being in the know. He is at his core egotistical, neurotic, prone to both sweeping megalomaniac rage and bouts of self-pity, and just generally melodramatic.
Socially speaking, he isn't interested in friends or romance especially, but is such an attention-hungry creature he will engage in plenty of social interaction, in the right mood and given the chance. Can be charming in short bursts, often will not bother; so, generally sarcastic and/or a bit rude. Also quite mad, and inhuman. May not react the way you'd expect to being shown kindness or mercy. Very distrustful of others, very distrustworthy himself, but sometimes subscribes to a sort of Aesop's fables-esque notion of reciprocity. For all that, he can be agreeable enough company if the mood takes him, but expecting his affection to be sincere (or for that sincerity to mean anything human or understandable) would be a mistake. Has casual disdain for humans and active dislike for Time-actives, Time Lords and their ships particularly so, of course. Not a fan of any Doctors, obviously.
Is deeply upset by any question of his identity; having come about in such a strange way, in a borrowed body, oh and having a name and purpose cadged from a Gallifreyan nursery rhyme have made him a bit ~sensitive. Insecure on some level about the nature of his existence, which is why he requires so much attention and makes so many messes--to be reassured that he exists. Won't take kindly to being made a subordinate, due to his past with Rassilon, but secretly finds the notion appealing; he'd like to have a purpose handed to him on a plate, now that his original purpose of being sent into a different universe to kill an entire race of whatevers is off the table. Vows not to be made into a puppet by anyone else, and would react very violently to being manipulated.
As far as likes/dislikes...He's wordy, likes poetry and riddles and wordgames and especially fairytales or nursery rhymes or fables. Nesting in references makes him feel at home (sometimes this means internet memes, and that's terrible). Very food motivated (thinks of the universe as something to consume, canonically) with especial fondness for fish, sweets, and odd flavour pairings. Likes surreal art and anything generally nonsensical, cynical or morbid. Terrified of Jabberwocks (it's canon. Don't look at me.) and not on the best terms with time, order, or linearity as a concept. Unnerved by large bright empty spaces, bit agoraphobic.
History: Zagreus exists (inasmuch as he does) due to, long story short, a mishap with a volatile and somewhat metaphysical substance not part of this universe: antitime. In the course of said mishap, the eighth incarnation of the Doctor (BFA-verse) was 'infected' with or by the stuff, resulting in madness, identity crises, and general hilarity. It's presented as a sort of Schrodinger's cat experiment--within the bounds of the TARDIS he is both the Doctor and Zagreus, but should he leave he'll be locked into one or the other. As to how the Doctor alighted on the idea of Zagreus for an identity in the first place, blame Rassilon: after the ah antitime mishap, he interfered with both the TARDIS and the Doctor, who were out of commission for six months, for his own purposes. Namely, to enlist the Doctor's services in the destruction of a race that would have evolved and supplanted Time Lords...if Rassilon hadn't locked them in another universe, and dang are they pissed about that. The Doctor awoke convinced he was a fictional monster from a story, and ended up having to embrace that identity to save the day, in the midst of a mess of Alice in Wonderland nonsense and Schrodinger's Cat jokes. Canonically, he is subdued and fed a counter-agent of sorts, and that is the end of Zagreus as a concept, for this universe anyway. So why not a Lovecraftian holiday, instead? Wikipedia has a plot synopsis
here, but it's long and very in-depth and reads like word salad without a good knowledge of Who-verse, honestly the audio is gibberish to a lot of people who have.
First Person Sample:
A dear_mun post or two or three (I know, it's meta, but it's first person)
His twitter might count? He's no stranger to social media posting anyway.
Third Person Sample:
Here. A thread that demonstrates his personality and abilities adequately, as part of a plot from another game (so, not canon to him now/for this game)
Other: So, I realise he's not very nice, and may be the most villainous character so far (if accepted) but I want to stress I don't god-mode or do any kind of mental shenanigans without discussion OOC. He may be an asshole with apocalyptic ambitions but I've been playing him for two years and he hasn't so much as knocked over a soda machine so far. I recognise and respect that this is an odd character with potential to be problematic in pretty much any setting, but I promise not to make a mess.
