ha, I just listened to them yesterday for the first time. I was originally drawn by the visuals, but there is something foul and unsettling about this music which draws me...I typically would associate these words with Black Metal, which is probably why I rarely give death metal bands a chance. I am glad I made an exception in this case.
Their entire aesthetic is built upon the 'uncomfortable', atmospheric qualities in death metal; the qualities that really suck your head into another space. I suppose some black metal fans don't find that in death metal upon first listen and unfortunately end up overlooking a lot of great music, but here's one gateway (aptly named).
This band basically took the most warped, dissonant qualities of bands like Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Immolation, etc. and distilled them into an absurd purity -- like death metal by way of David Lynch. When I listen to Portal I get this impression of fleshbeasts emerging from some hellish dimension, senseless, all flailing tentaclesque appendages and gnashing teeth.
I will definitely be going. I'm considering skipping the third day since most of the best bands will be on Friday and Saturday, but I will be there.
I've been listening to all three of Portal's albums pretty much on repeat for the last few days, and while Seepia is different I can still barely explain how. It has a very different sound -- maybe it's all at once more metal and riffy yet even crazier with the arpeggio bukkakestorm and splattercrashing blastbeats Idon'tfuckingknow. I love everything they've done, though, and I can't wait to see them live.

I am going to see them in May. And so are you, if you get your shit together.
BTW, have decided that I find Seepia "challenging", meaning that I don't really like it very much but think I should or I'm not cool.
