2010: Earth is still Earth.

It's the year Two Thousand Fuckin' Ten and I have the hangover of the decade (literally).

Where's my hoverboard and flying cars, robots, and space travel?

At least we still have a plenitude of booze. Also, music.

I have not heard a single one of these bands.

Any of them sludge-y Electric Wizard-like doom?

It was a great year for death metal, and I know you've enjoyed some death metal in your time. You might enjoy the Grave Miasma, Ulcerate, Funebrarum, etc. Or the Intestine Baalism from late '08... So good.

The only album on my list that is even doom metal of any kind is the Stabat Mater one, which is really bleak funereal death/doom-awesome, but maybe not so much your thing. Beyond that, I can't say I've heard a lot of recent doom. The Jex Thoth s/t came out in '08, and that is pretty excellent female-fronted Sabbath worship. The Acid Witch album was pretty fun, too, but that's more of a wonky/krauty death-doom thing.

So I'll try to check these couple out. I do love Sabbath, too.

Gotta admit, though, that I haven't listened to a lot of guitar music of late and I think death metal might just be a bit too grating for these old ears at the moment. I guess I go through phases.

Something like Grave Miasma is more expansive & doomy than it is blasting & brutal, so you might be able to appreciate it even now. And Intestine Baalism are really great melodic death metal. Still with the monster vocals, of course, but these are not much like older Cryptopsy or Suffocation-two bands I know you did enjoy at one point. Try a couple of youtube samples or something.

I actually didn't include The Priest's Command on my list only because it is a compilation, but Faustcoven are amazing.

I haven't heard that other one at all though, so I will have to check it out.

Teitanblood sounds old, you might like that one.

I have not yet been able to listen to Nazxul's new album all way through. It just irritates the hell out of me. Same with Averse Sefira, any of their albums. I can't even pin down what it is about either that makes me reflexively reach for the "power" button on my stereo, either ( ... )

and not a lot of relationships, long-distance or otherwise.

I think I might be able to make a guess at what you don't like about the new Nazxul album. It sounds like a super-polished Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk ripoff. "Ripoff" is a bit strong, but maybe it doesn't appeal to you because it's mere simulacra. I think it's still a decent record, but I was hoping for something much better.

Come to think of it, I have the feeling that I won't be listening to so much music in 2010, which I find sort of depressing. But it'll be a good thing-I'll be busy with important stuff.

Man, there were a ton of good releases this year! I'm still catching up. I forgot that Caïna album came out in '09, hmm.

I had no idea there were upcoming Deathspell, Morbid Angel and Walknut albums! Excellent. I really hope Agalloch actually deliver. A couple of people on Last.fm were claiming that Belus leaked, but I highly doubt it...

The Morbid Angel and Walknut albums were kinda supposed to be out in 2009, actually, along with the Dark Tribe, but they never happened. So I'm hoping we can count on them this year. Same for Deathspell Omega-that one is only speculation, but it is generally expected that they'll release the final part of the current trilogy of albums this year.

Fourth Reich is certainly a shift in sound for Katharsis-rather than total chaos it sounds more controlled, focused on intensity. I don't mind the slightly cleaner sound-I'd say it only lends to the power sustained through the album, and "So Nail the Hearts" is one of the best tracks they've done.

I've been into Drudkh since Autumn Aurora, myself. It's not like this is the first time they've changed up their sound-Blood in Our Wells actually pretty much ties with Autumn Aurora for my favorite of their albums, depending on mood/season/etc. But yeah, Microcosmos is still Drudkh, and still a good album, but not quite up to par with their very best. Which is still better than a hell of a lot of shit.

That Walknut has actually been rumored for about a year and a half now, so I'm not entirely sure what's going on with that. But I remain hopeful.

Hmmm, I probably need to listen to that Destruktor album again. Along with Weapon and some other things that was one of the many albums I played once and just never went back to.

I've never been all that crazy about Funeral Mist, to be honest. Salvation has always struck me as mostly comical (I wrote something a while back about how it opens with cheesy screaming SFX straight from a "Halloween noises" cassette I had as a boy) with a few decent riffs punctuating the endless blasturbation here and there. I probably haven't given the new one enough attention, but nobody's really convinced me I won't be thoroughly bored with it anyway. Are you a fan?
