I think the key symbol here is Wickery Bridge. This is the place where Elena is abandoned by people (where people die on her). She lost her parents here, lost her human self, let go of her "old self" more than once. This is the place where, in the end, she's alone under water, and she believes she deserves it, because she destroys everything she touches. Then Damon goes down this bridge with her... and nothing happens TO HIM. He's still there after she wakes up. He isn't broken by what happened, isn't damaged, doesn't leave her. It's very telling that she starts expressing her feelings for him right after that. It's not gratitude. It's certainty that he'll never ever leave her, certainty that she won't and can't destroy him. Elena is "cursed" and people die around her, but Damon is untouched by her "curse". Now she can let herself love him.
