Art does not excuse rape. Nothing does.
But nothing should make a victim who wants to forgive and move on put herself and her family through hell either.

The facts in this case are very particular and thorny. I recommend the following analysis:

The line that most matters to me is: "The girl in the case is now in her 40s; she has said the case is behind her and that she has forgiven Polanski."

I can't say if she's right or wrong to do so, and maybe I don't understand the US Criminal justice system (after all, I thought leading a country to war on false pretenses and shooting a man in the face were probably criminal) but barring a change of heart I don't see how this case can go forward.

She settled her civil case with him, which, if this were purely a civil matter, would be the end of it. But it isn't, because (as I think we can agree), drugging and anally raping a 13 year old girl is a crime, and the state has an interest in seeing that it should be treated as such. And as a society, we have an interest in seeing that criminals are punished, right ( ... )

The petition appears to miss the point entirely that the victim does not want him prosecuted and the whole thing dropped, so the last point particularly annoys me ( ... )

You're going to see a fairly clean split between two groups:

the group that thinks luring a 13 year old girl under false pretenses to an empty house to drug and anally rape her is somehow forgivable,

and the group that doesn't.

I'd hope the first group could be swayed, but I can promise you that the second group can't be.

"I'd hope the first group could be swayed, but I can promise you that the second group can't be."

Save apparently for the then 13 year old in question.

You're clearly indicating by your icon choice that you want me to burn down your house.

Some good answers here

Also good discussion here
"Am I missing something, or is the whole Roman Polanski controversy only a controversy because he's a celebrity director?"
