I read The Hobbit over and over again years ago. The movies are an AU of the book. It's definitely a great read but don't let it mar your enjoyment of the movies. I love comparing movies to the books that inspired them. My folks are very critical. Perhaps fanfiction has helped me since there are so many AU stories. I don't think I will ever truly sell my folks on fanfiction. Too bad really. It's an endless universe of realities starring our favorite characters.

Oh, I LOVE that idea and that is exactly how I'll approach the movies; thank you for the illumination! I, too, love fanfiction because it allows you to explore characters you love in so many different scenarios; the challenge, the fun, of it is trying to get the characters to sound like themselves in these strange, new worlds you've dropped them in. I'm sure I'll eventually pick up The Hobbit, but for now I'm going to focus on enjoying the movies.
