I just submitted a short story for possible publication to an online sci-fi, fantasy, and horror literary journal. And so my quest to become a professional author begins.

Aww, thanks Cait!! It's nerve wrecking and exciting all at once; I keep checking my email for news when I just submitted it. I can't imagine how this is gonna feel once I finally finish my novel and start querying!

Not sure where you sent it, but most places post an estimated response time, if that helps the nerves. For the book, when you get pretty close to done start putting together a book proposal; most publishers want a letter and some chapters, but not the whole thing upfront.
