Sorry, I was at the gym galumphing my way through 4 miles: 1) I like how you set atmosphere and history and mood with this, particularly how the jokey "Ha ha, Ray is in a ragtime bang" turned into this very tender moment of them sharing a banjo.
2) It seems fitting and frustratingly sad that the Neela of the 1910s and Neela of the 2000s share a very very similar throughline of being stifled by her own oppressive expectations as much as her family's and, like, society's.
3) And they still both have a postcard...awwwwww.
4) Good job only giving Gates the most cursory of mentions.
5) Abby is still great, even in a cameo appearance.
And you should totally post it to FF.net. I imagine there's been a real drought of Ray/Neela the last few years.
Thank you for posting it to the Ray and Neela community--so glad to have found the story! I'm not usually much for AUs, but really enjoyed this. Thank you!
Oh, lady, I love this! It's so richly atmospheric and the translated/transported characters still make so much sense, which is my favorite kind of AU. The descriptions of everyone at the beginning, Archie's flat feet and Gates being dead! Semi-respectable ladies! He never met anybody like her! The SOUNDTRACK! Also, the whole phrase that begins "prowl like a fiend" is just so fantastically, delightfully Neela. Thank you so much for this, friend.
Oh, YAY, I'm so thrilled you liked this. It started off as jokes ("and then he gets hit by an ice wagon") and turned into this earnest, melancholy thing.
This is lovely. I love how you've transplanted them into this period. The Neela/Ray flashback and the way he stopped her from accepting Dubenko's proposal and settling, when she'd fought even harder for everything else was great.

I bet if I posted this on ffnet, someone would say a nice thing to me. Right? It's not time for my Lorazepam yet and I need some kind of soothing.

This thing really surprised me. I'm happy it turned into something.
I need a title, but I don't want to google any dumb poetry.
