Sunday drabble, vol. 3

A/N: Okay, so yesterday I published my story for the angst-meme prompt, and today it's time for the drabbles. And I'm so ashamed because I got amazing prompts this week, and I'm already so late with a promised drabble for ohblainers on tumblr, which is almost done but not quite, and my inspiration decided a strike is in order. I don't know why - it was fine yesterday, but today all I can think about is the next chapter of Leave Me Breathless. So I'm sorry, I'll use the prompts for the next week's drabble Sunday, and today have the one story I wrote last night. If you read last week's drabbles, you may recognize its connection to The Empty House.

THE PINK SUITCASE

The pink suitcase has its story, just like so many other items in their house and their lives together. Over the years it got so entangled in their personal history with all their travels and trips, goodbyes and helloes, that is got a very special place in their hearts. Kurt is really happy that he chose the best he could afford back then, because even after all this time it still serves Blaine just fine, a bit scratched and battered, but always there like an old friend.

Kurt remembers the beginning, the hilarious mistake that brought the hot pink mammoth to their door. It was in college, after their second or third trip back home together. Blaine’s old suitcase refused to open after they returned and when they finally managed to pick the lock, it wouldn’t close anymore. So for his upcoming birthday, Kurt bought his boyfriend a new, beautiful suitcase - big, classy black one, on wheels. He ordered it from an internet shop and was very proud of his choice. Until it came.

He was very careful to chose a reliable shop, but mistakes happen even to the best sometimes. Blaine called it fate. Suffice to say, when he opened the big box on his birthday, the color almost blinded them. Kurt was horrified. Blaine? Squealed in delight.

They spent the next three days arguing. Kurt insisted on returning the pink suitcase; the shop would exchange it immediately for the proper color. Blaine refused and nothing would make him change his mind, not even Kurt’s threat that he would never travel with Blaine again as long as he blinded everyone in sight with his baggage. In the end, Blaine won, of course. He insisted that he fell in love with the suitcase and nothing would make him give it away. So it stayed. And over time, Kurt learned to like, and then love it too.

It has personality, just like Blaine. It’s easy to spot in the crowd whenever he picks his husband up at the airport after one of his many travels, and even easier to find on the baggage carousel when they travel together - the hottest pink is always theirs. Kurt secretly believes it was designed as a secret weapon, to shock and confuse, the shade of pink impossible to miss anywhere. No one could get away with trying to steal it. People look at Blaine funny when he walks with it, and little girls are always jealous.

The suitcase has seen a lot of the world with them. Blaine travels often, he has lectures all over the US, but it’s not all. They just love travels. During one of the darkest periods in Kurt’s life, a time that got so close to breaking them, they went abroad together for the first time, to Spain. It was Blaine’s impulsive idea, that probably saved them, and possibly Kurt’s life too. They both discovered the fun of traveling then, and have found time to go somewhere new every year since. They’ve been in many European countries, as well as Egypt and Japan, Australia and Canada.

Now, as he’s folding their clothes neatly and packing them in the pink suitcase - Blaine always lets everything crease, so it has been Kurt’s job for years now - Kurt knows they’d need to curb their hunger for traveling and adventure for a while. But it’s just a temporary stall and after a couple of years they’ll come back to it, and it will be even better. More complete.

Because this particular trip that begins tomorrow morning will change their lives forever, and they are so ready for it. This time, when they come home in a week, they won’t be just Kurt and Blaine. They’ll be something new, too.

This time when they’re back, there will be two more heartbeats in the peaceful house they share, and they’ll be here to stay. A two-year-old boy and a 6-month-old girl, whose parents died in a car crash four months ago and who need all the love and care they can get, the love and care they will find here in spades.

Mark and Amelia. Their children.
