Actually Pocohantas WAS a princess. The movie annoyed me, though. However, it is rather surprising how Disney hasn't branched out more in terms of fairy tales/legends from around the world (Mulan was excellent, but The Jungle Book was an insult to Rudyard Kipling. And Aladdin....don't even get me started on how they used Middle Eastern characters and setting...with Caucasian culture. Honestly, there is barely ANY conformity to Middle Eastern culture in that movie, which really annoys me (except saying "Allah" a few times). Also, Jasmine is pretty much useless in that movie, even near the end. She does try though, she just sucks at anything resembling helping). However, I really do prefer this interracial pairing. I think it says a whole lot more than just same-race happily-ever-afters (which every other Disney movie has been, save Pocohantas which wasn't happy and The Hunchback of Notre Dame which was a travesty to literature
( ... )
Well, they are fantasies. They never paid much devotion to European cultures either.
But Jasmine had useful skills and helped defeat Jafar (by distracting him, but then Aladdin failed at actually fighting him, too).
And I realize that Pocahontas was somewhat princess-y, but I thought she was more like a mayor's daughter than a princess. Her father only had local power, didn't he?
I forgot Mulan! Does she count as a Disney princess? They don't play her up like the others (perhaps because she was less pink and more warrior).
Hmm....true. Still, Pocohantas is sometimes considered a princess. Not Mulan. She was a citizen, but a damn awesome one. Joan of Arc-y, but she was sane and didn't hear voices.
