Stars

“And that,” he pointed, “that’s Orion. There’s his belt, there.”

Dimitri traced the line of stars with his finger. “That bright star is Sirius. The Big Dipper is over there…”

“They’re beautiful,” she breathed.

“Yeah.” Dimitri combed his fingers through her hair, splaying it across his stomach. “Gorgeous,” he agreed.

“How far away do you think they are?”

“Millions and billions of miles,” he said.

“I wish I could catch one…keep it in a jar next to my bed forever.”

“I don’t need a star,” Dimitri said. “I’ve got you.”

Anya lifted herself, and without another word, kissed Dimitri softly.

Mail

“I can’t even pronounce this person’s name!” Dimitri cried.

“I didn’t name him,” she laughed. “Blame his parents.”

“Is it even a man?”

Anya checked the envelope. “Yes. He’s the son of a friend of my grandmother’s cousin’s friend or something…”

“This is our wedding-what do they care if we invite some guy neither of us has met whose name we can’t even pronounce?”

“Speak for yourself. I’m being forced to memorize these names and their faces so I don’t embarrass us.”

“How much is this going to cost, anyway?”

“I’m royalty-sending mail doesn’t cost anything.”

“Good Lord.”

Love

“You do realize that you can’t do any more conning,” she ran her finger down his nose.

“What kind of a man would I be if I didn’t provide for my wife?”

“You don’t have to, Dimitri-I’m the Grand Duchess. Put your pride down and be a man.”

“Love, if I were to put my pride down, I wouldn’t be a man. It’s not that I don’t trust you, it’s just…I’ll look stupid if you’re the one bringing home the bacon, so to speak.”

“All men are babies.”

“I am not a baby!”

“Then you mustn’t be a man.”

Day

“It just doesn’t feel like day in the winter,” Anya sighed contently as she walked slowly. The crisp air felt cool in her lungs. “That’s why I like May so much. The weather is day…it’s lively. Like Pooka.”

“Why did you name the poor thing that, anyways? It’s an awful name for a dog.”

“Maybe he thinks you have an awful name for a man.”

“You’re lucky I love you-life would be so much easier without all of your stupid arguments,” he teased.

“Maybe, but life wouldn’t be half as fun!”

Dimitri shook his head, laughing. “Anya, you’re insane.”

Family

“Hey, what are you still doing up?” Dimitri asked.

“I missed you,” she whispered through the dark.

“Yeah? Me too.”

“Yeah, come here.”

Dimitri sat on the bed.

“Give me your hand,” Anya led his hand onto her belly and trailed it down lower. “Feel there?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Well, I-we…our baby is in there.”

“Anya-really?!”

She nodded enthusiastically.

“I’m going to be a father?”

“Yeah.”

“We’re going to have a family?”

“Yes, Dimitri! Now,” she leaned up and kissed him softly. “Promise me you won’t be a bad influence,” she laughed softly, pushing his hair out of his face.
