...purchase a domain name? I am pondering the idea of putting together an online portfolio of baby/child photography and putting an ad in our local newspaper offering my services on a very small scale. I don't even know how serious I am about it- I mean, it is something I love obsessively, but I don't know how well I could translate it into working ( Read more... )

Thank you! I think it may fall a bit flat when I'm trying to photograph a subject I don't know/love as well as my own child, but I figure it's worth a shot.

I usually buy all my domain names from GoDaddy.com (even though their "Go Daddy Girl" advertisements drive me bonkers in the same way that I'll never eat a Hooters chicken wing.) Oh, and if you buy from them, don't feel like you need to purchase the "extras" they're going to try to sell you... unless you want to buy web hosting from them. That's the only other thing you'll really need in order to get the domain squared away. Everything else is pretty much entirely unnecessary.

When it comes to the website itself, you might consider signing up for a free blog somewhere and pointing the domain name to that. That way, you could post photos like crazy, put in tags/keywords and also have a few other pages that could tell folks more about you, etc. That might save you the hassle of learning HTML or buying software to put the site together (like Frontpage or Dreamweaver.) You'd probably be able to get something up and running in a matter of no time that way. But, just a suggestion. :)
