Writeups for his more powerful techniques as I currently understand them. As always, I'm up for conversation if anyone has questions, theories, or idears. I like idears. :3
So one day, Ryouga stumbled into town as he's wont to do. He'd challenged Ranma to a duel, and, of course, Ranma accepted. They met, and Ryouga effectively molly-whomped Ranma with one move: the Shi Shi Hokodan (or Roaring Lion Bullet). Ranma couldn't believe, after all his training and fights, how EASILY he was put down.
And, worse, Ryouga taunted him with one fact: the Shi Shi Hokodan wasn't perfected by a longshot.
And this is where we get to philosophize on energy in the Ranmaverse. It is similar to the Ki that runs the galactic(ly stupid and drawn out) fights of Dragonball Z. The difference in Ki and chakra is simple enough: you can't run out of Ki. It can be refolded, cut off, but theoretically, you can never cut a person off from their Ki. Examples for this, in and out of camp are Ranma's trials with the Hiryuu Shoten Ha--he was struck with a Moxibustion pressure point attack that routed his Ki as to make his strength nonexistent. Yet, he was still able to use it to cast the Hiryuu Shoten Ha. Also, in-camp, Neji, in his first fight with Yuusuke, did his level best to seal up Yuusuke's energy/chakra points--and Yuusuke kept coming at him, be it with a weakened battle aura.
Back to the techniques in question, Ryouga was using his ki to flatten Ranma with a physical attack--a very destructive physical attack in more than one sense. While an average Shi Shi Hokodan hits with the force of six Mack Trucks, it also cost something to cast it--the person using it has to be able to draw on their own depression and use that to cast their ki from them. So the more EMO the person is, the more destructive the Shi Shi Hokodan--the perfected version took out the Furinkan soccer field.
The Perfect Shi Shi Hokodan calls for complete misery--a despair so great that it swallows the soul. The caster would expel all their heavy (depressive) Ki, and it would come crashing back down from the sky on the caster and anything surrounding them (in this case, a city block, a soccer field, and Ranma). The trick to surviving such a blast is the inherent weakness to this and Ranma's counter Ki technique, the Moko Takabisha (Fierce Tiger Domineering)--so long as a person is in a null emotional state--unable to feel ANYTHING, the emotionally-fueled Ki will not harm them.
Taking a few paces back to explain Ranma's counter to Ryouga's new attack. Eventually, he DOES discover how the Shi Shi Hokodan is executed, and then realizes that it will pretty much be a cold day in Hell when he can effectively out-emo Ryouga (his father says it best--Ranma is far too happy-go-lucky to properly wield the Roaring Lion Bullet). So he figures if depression can fuel Ki, then he can substitute it with a better emotion. Arrogance. Confidence. Defiance in the face of adversity. The Moko Takabisha (Fierce Tiger Domineering).
Of course, this meant nothing in the face of the Perfect Shi Shi Hokodan--it's hard to stay confident in the face of a tower of pure Ki coming down at you. That's when he found out about the Zen that expelling the Shi Shi Hokodan puts the caster in. He then used some minor tricks--telling him he kissed Akane to fuel one more Perfect Shi Shi Hokodan, and Ryouga's own power--riding the wave of the blast as it came crashing to the earth, and then shouting to Ryouga that he lied about the kiss to juke the boy from his Zen state, to defeat him. The whole ordeal established a few things:
- New attacks for Ranma (both the Shi Shi Hokodan and the Moko Takabisha)
- Ranma can take MONSTER Ki damage and still stand.
- Ryouga can chuck Ki around until doomsday, if properly motivated.
- Emo CAN be used as a weapon of mass destruction.
In volume 13 of the manga, and season 4 of the anime, Happousai gets fed up with Ranma's meddling and slaps a hot coal in the middle of his back. Ranma didn't think much of it at the time (other than omfg HOT), but he soon discovered it's later affects--it was a shiatsu technique that cripples a person's natural strength. Even someone of Kenpachi's caliber would punch with all the strength of a baby.
And, being Ranma 1/2, his informed enemies quickly took advantage of his weakened state and beat him to an inch of his life. Later on, Akane, Ranma, and Dr. Tofu discover that a moxibustion chart holds the cure to the shiatsu. They also learn that the chart was pilfered from its resting place years ago by none other than Happousai himself.
So after Ranma is pwned yet again, Cologne gives him an way to defeat Happousai with little trouble: The Heavenly Dragon Ascension Wave, or Hiryu Shoten Ha.
This, in essence is Ranma's most powerful counter and offensive weapon. Far different from the pure offensive power and stamina-building bonuses of the Mouko Takabisha. For a point reference:
- At any point once he learned the HSH, it requires little energy on his part. So long as the requirements are met, he could fire a couple of in adequate succession (See Herb's fight, and the final battle with Saffron.
- Unless that person is a ki master, on had UNGODLY constitution (and even this one is iffy--See the final battle with Saffron), it's almost always guaranteed to work.
The basic technique requires several factors: A caster (Ranma), an opponent, "cool" ki, "hot" ki, and the "coils of the dragon" lure.
To explain, Ranma, the caster, would have to maintain a "soul of ice", keeping his head level an focused on his opponent. Any disruption on Ranma's emotions that would alter his cold ki output (soul of ice, or cold ki), or distract him from luring his opponent would make the maneuver fail.
His opponent has to have a battle lust. Again, anything keeping that opponent from generating a natural battle lust (hot ki, or killer instinct, murderous intent, to be explained in-depth later on) would be detrimental to the execution of the Hiryu Shoten Ha.
The lure is, in essence, a spiral pattern. Ranma would draw his opponent into this pattern, allowing the natural flow of the fight to do the rest of his work. The hot and cold ki would mix within the spiral pattern, creating a tornado effect once the technique is executed. Once near enough in the center of the spiral, the caster, Ranma, would throw an uppercut, which doesn’t have to land anywhere near the opponent. The resulting initial blast and tornado is more than enough to deal with them.
But the tornado, environmentally-damaging as it is, is only the metaphor, "The coils of the dragon". The deadliness involves the uppercut, which throws all the mixing aura at the opponent with terminal force. And the "hotter" the opponent's ki, the harder the blast hits. For example, Genma, Ranma, and Ukyou came at Cologne, the caster, with the intent of sparring, and she knocked them all for a loop with the HSH. They were all up and about in less than ten minutes. But later on, Ryouga was intent on killing Ranma because of an imagined crime against Akane. His anger almost got him killed when Ranma activated the Hiryu Shoten Ha.
In short, Ranma sparring against someone and casting the HSH wouldn't do much, but against an entity like Kenpachi, who LIVES for battle and killing, it can be essentially near-fatal (to both himself and the surrounding environment. Because his massive aura would be similar to Herbs, capable of shattering a mountain).
That is the basic technique. Ranma has since developed several variants in both the anime and manga, not entirely working off of several different heat sources. After he learns the move, he learns Happousai already KNOWS the technique, and reigns in his battle aura accordingly. But then Ranma plays on the "heat" of the old man's perverse nature, and soundly trashes him, and several others. With Herb, who also knew the technique and adjusted even better than Happousai, Ranma plays off of the residue amounts of ki floating in the air from Herb's aerial moves, launches HIMSELF into the tornado, gathers all the residue, and slams it back into Herb, knocking out the prince. With Natsume and Kurumi's Hiryu Carimbou attack, Ranma pulled the hot ki streaming from Kurumi's ribbon and threw a stationary, horizontal Hiryu Shoten Ha at the two girls, with Akane dead in the middle, protected by the cold ki from Natsume's weapon, as well as her own calm aura. (Hiryu Shöten Ha kaiteiban: Gedan Rasen)
Genma created these two variants of the Saotome School of Anything Goes long ago, but sealed them away. He said it was because of how serious they were, but it was really because they were perfected thieving techniques, guaranteed to work every single times.
He wasn't far off of his initial comment, however. Both the Yamasenken and Umisenken, the Mountain and Sea of One-Thousand Fist, respectively, are extremely dangerous arts, and can kill an unwary or low-skilled person.
To begin, the alternate names to the styles are the way of the noisy thief (Yamasenken) and the way of the quiet thief (Umisenken). It likens the body to a house, ripe for full frontal assault, or stealthy sneaking in from behind. Offensively, the Noisy Thief is the better, and deadlier of the two, since all of its moves involved blowing past a person's defenses. The Quiet Thief sneaks past these defenses, undetected.
Arguably, it is somewhat impossible to learn the Umisenken techniques without having a base knowledge of the Yamasenken, so it can be sad that, after the duel, Ranma had a grip on both schools.
Yamasenken Attacks:
Mouko Kaimon Ha (Fierce Tiger Crashing Through Gates): The person makes a loud, sudden shout, usually "DON'T MOVE!", and sweeping his arms apart from his body, kicks forward at the same time. This throws the opponent's arms, or "gates" away from their body, leaving them defenseless to stop the devastating kick.
Dokuja Tenketsu Sho (Poison Snake Deep Hole Blow): Awaiting a distraction of any kind, the person strikes toward the opponent's heart, palm flat, fingers first. This maneuver would have killed Ranma the first time if it weren't for Genma's intervention.
Kinshi Kinbakusho (Gold Cord Tight Binding Soar): Using some handy rope, the person ties the "gates" still, leaving them open for a host of attacks.
Geimon Tetsu Sen Shi (Welcome Gates Fan Fingers): Very similar to the Dokuja Tenketsu Sho, but done toward the lower torso/diaphragm area. Again, a lethal attack to the defenseless and unprepared.
Kaichu Hoju Satsu (In-the-pocket Round Hug Death): Utilizes distraction and openings to run in, trap the arms, and bear-hug the opponent. With superior strength, leverage, and stance, the aim is to break that opponent's spine.
Kijin Raishu Dan (Demon God Assault Bomb): The ultimate technique of the Yamasenken (with two other variants). Person gathers all of their battle aura, and throws their arms so fast that it creates a vacuum. Ki blades result, cutting nearly anything in their way.
Kijin Dai Ran Bu (Demon God Big Mad Dance): The first variant. Person would spin in place, releasing a massive amount of ki blades indiscriminately.
Sai Dai Kyu Kijin Raishu Dan (First Rate Demon God Assault Bomb): This is two ki blades, able to cut through ANYTHING.
Umisenken Attacks:
"The Ghost Stance": As stated, the Yamasenken is the more violent of the schools. The Umisenken is set to counter the majority of its techniques, but has more than its own offensive arsenal. The Ghost Stance, for instance, renders the user completely invisible to any and all senses. So long as the stance and mindset of the user is not interrupted (say, Ranma breaking out of the stance because he's angry or distracted), they can pillage the "house" at leisure.
Haku Dato Shin Sho (White Snake Reliable Fist): Under the Stance, the person delivers a series of finger-first strikes to the "back door" or back of the opponent. This attack is armor-piercing, sending the damage out to the other side of the body. First seeing this move resulted in Ranma being out cold for quite some time.
Gai Ko Restu Gai Dan (Armored Door Fierce Fang Decision): Counter to the Geimon Tetsu Sen Shi by catching the fist in one's mouth.
Shichu Raikuchi Sei (Support Fall-To-Earth Posture): Person uses flexibility to catch the persons arms with their legs, and sweeps their legs, or "support", from underneath them. This is usually followed by the Haku Dato Shin Sho.
Goshin Ryu Sei Fu (Body-Defense Meteor Cloth): Three-part maneuver, and counter to the Kaiju Hoju Satsu.. Starts with person taking a hidden cloth and completely wrapping it around the opponent's head.
Ri Giyo Hon Shin (Body Carp Wave): Next, they flip over the opponent in a posture similar to a carp swimming.
Haizan Tokai Tai (Carry-Mountain Fall-In-The-Ocean-Posture): And it ends with a very awkward-looking choke hold with the cloth.
Goshin Dai Ryu Sei Fu (Body-Defense Shooting Star Cloth): A different variant, and initial counter to the ki effects of the Yamasenken ultimate attack, the Kijin Raishu Dan. Person takes a cloth around themselves and goes into the Ghost Stance. Then begins "storing" local matter into the cloth itself. In canon's case, Ranma used the technique to loosen the soil all around Kumon Ryu, as well as pocket and store broken stone pieces and Soun Tendo's outfit (he was standing far too close to the fight. Whoops).
Yasha Tan Kai Ho (Demon Deep Sea Wrap): And this is where it paid off. Ranma reappeared with an enormous load of stolen matter trapped in the cloth. When Kumon launched the Sei Dai Kijin Raishu Dan at Ranma, he instead caught the contents of the cloth. As well as brought up all the loosened ground because of the vacuum kickback. He was then buried by a huge mount of dirt and stone.
As canon follows, Ranma defeats Kumon, and as per their agreement, has him swear to "seal" the Yamasenken. Ranma, himself, opts never to use the techniques. And now that I know why, I can use them to my crack'y heart's content.
... Which admittedly won't be often, since I have to plot how to get him to that level, first. And then he actually has to have some sort of a challenge about it. :3
When Ranma was around seven or so years of age, his brilliant father came across a manual that boasted an invincible martial arts technique. The training was incredibly dangerous, and likely to kill the trainee.
And, being Genma, he was all for it.
So he spends a couple of days pilfering the local town's entire bounty of stray cats. He then digs a sizable pit, tosses them in, and starves them blind for several more days.
Then he wraps his son in fish sausages, bounds him up impossibly, and tosses him into said pit.
The results were predictable. One boy, scared up. Fish sausages, thoroughly devoured. Invincible technique? Nowhere to be seen.
So, Genma, being the lovely and benevolent father he is, furthers his position as WORST PARENT OF ALL TIME IN THE HISTORY OF ANIME/MANGA and chucks the barely-healed boy in the very next day.
This time with fish cakes.
See the above results. Only add a lot more flesh wounds and a sense of delirium. And this doesn't sit well with Genma. The manual said the practices should be working: Ranma should be a one-boy killing machine, by now.
So, again, in Ranma goes. And this is done over a few more days, with a new fish product everyday. It should be noted that while Ranma is not happy and probably borderline insane, the cats are quite happy, because food.
But eventually, something breaks. "Ranma" disappears, and "Neko" leaps out of the pit, tearing the opening gate--steel, mind--into so many ribbons, and just FUCKS GENMA'S SHIT RIGHT UP.
Then he goes to find a warm lap to sit in.
And this is how Ranma gained the Neko-ken. The fallout was simple enough: for one, Genma never finished reading the manual, which says in nice, bolded letters, that "you'd have to be an idiot in order to attempt this faulty technique." As another point, the technique is faulty. Ranma is, literally, quite invincible in "neko" state. He'll shrug massive damage, be twice as fast as he usually is, and has a natural ki-claw ability that can and will make short work of any solid. But he's also a full-on cat, which means he's playful, hunts, lazes--everything that a cat does. Hard to focus on an enemy when that sunspot in that tree looks so damn comfortable...
But when he does focus, it's about to be a whole new ballgame for the opponent (Cologne had to forfeit their matchup and get Akane to calm him down because she did NOT want to pull out the stops it would have required to put her down. That, and she was too busy laughing at the fact Ranma-Neko had a full-grown Killer Whale in her mouth).
He can snap out of it, however. Neko will go away after a nice nap (usually in a warm lap), or you can shock Ranma awake with a good old spash of hot or cold water (depending on which form he's in at the time).
As to how Ranma deals with his certified psychosis, it's his only real fear. There has never been a case of ailurophobia so severe as his. Any mewling, purring--the smell or faintest sight of a cat of any kind will send him running for the hills, no matter what's in his way at the time (interesting enough, he doesn't have many problems saying cat--a good thing, considering a lot of his advance techniques are all have to do with tigers).
