I loved reading this, even though it was a bit brutal. It's so vivid.

I liked your description of the scary scary room.. We had a room like that in the farmhouse I grew up in. We called it "the back room", and it was always dark - there was no overhead light, and no lamps or anything. The best you could do was turn on the kitchen light and hope some of it would spill in. There was a desk back there, but no one ever used it. There was a closet, that always had a strange smell, that we kept what few board games we owned in.. and my dad kept his stacks and stacks of Playboy magazines on a shelf back there.. but other than that, the room served no purpose.

Of course if we still had that house (it was torn down a year or two ago), I'd be able to put my decorating sense to work and make "the back room" a functional, pleasant space! Perhaps a nice seating area where we could have coctails and talk about times past.
