Photos, the old fashioned way...

A couple of months ago, I decided that I needed something to decorate my carrel- something to keep my for getting depressed in my small windowless room in the library- so I ordered prints of a bunch of my favorite photos up on Flickr. The pics looked great. and it was really nice to have something physical to look at

I agree with you, and further I would offer that I think part of it is the sheer quantity: someone sends you their photos from vacation, and you're stuck sorting through 100 digital photos of their weeklong vacation, trying to find the interesting ones. When you have prints made, typically you have only the best ones made so it becomes a highlight reel of sorts. It's sort of like the mass blogging phenomenon - people lose sight of the fact that the minutia from their everyday isn't actually interesting to anyone but them, but they put it all out there because they can (you, obviously, being an exception here, too).
