I have a quick question. It's probably all kinds of stupid but here goes...
It's the extra stuff that optional for the vidder, not the character/pairing part right?
For example if someone requests say a Stargate Atlantis Sheppard/Beckett vid then the person assigned couldn't make a Sheppard/McKay vid instead right?
Fandom is the only criteria -- character/pairing and any prompts are ALL optional. So, yes, technically a vidder assigned could make a Sheppard/McKay vid. I don't think I've ever seen something that someone does NOT want made at festivids though (and that's where I'm mostly plagiarizing the rules from) but fandom is really the only requirement. Unlike fic, vid exchanges tend to be less specific otherwise the vidder is really limited, IMO.
Okay, here's where I show my ignorance on vidding exchanges.
I thought that the vidder would at least have to go by the character/pairing the person requests. Because while I like all of the fandoms I listed there are some characters and pairings that I am simply not found of at all. And I know I can't be the only one. Shouldn't the recipient at least kind of get what he/she asks for. I mean I get the part about the prompt/music because not everyone has the same tastes and sometimes the prompts just aren't inspiring but honestly if I requested a Sheppard/Mckay vid and instead I got let's say a Sheppard/Weir vid I wouldn't like it at all. (I really, really didn't ask for that I'm just using it as an example) :)
Trying to match a multi-fandom exchange on characters/pairing with such a small number of participants really isn't feasible. Just to highlight an example, you and I share many favorite fandoms but few favorite characters. ((and I adore you for it, you know that)).
I think you'll find that people will lean away from pairings in vid exchanges and focus on a character or ensemble/general sort of vid unless they feel inspired by pairings/prompts listed. At least, that has been the trend I've seen in the past in other vid exchanges. You'll have to trust/appreciate your vidder to be inspired and creative within fandoms you've chosen. NGL, for me it's more about creating than receiving anyway.
My first vid exchange I received a vid that was absolutely NOTHING like I expected or requested and to this day it remains one of my favorite vids.
