It won't be easy for neither him nor you, but I think it'd be best to have him closer to home ... might be hard on him, but save you a lot of hassle. And it's more and more obvious that he can't be left to his own devices any more.
Is there anything at all salvageable in that house? If not, it might be easier to have professionals deal with the cleanup...
Take it step by step, and maybe try to delegate as much as you can, for your own mental health - I'm wishing you all plenty of strength!
