I've seen a few end-of-year memes start to crop up, so I figured I'd gather my list of
Books I Read in 2006
I'm relying heavily on the use of my "books" tag, so there may be others I did read and didn't remember to tag (or didn't post about, and thus didn't have anything to tag). Last year I counted the Little House series (9 books) as a single unit - this year, I'm counting howevermany items in the series as individuals, so it might look a bit more inflated over
last year's list.
Completed: (Asterisk (*) indicates a re-read)
1) Fool's Errand - Robin Hobb (I actually began this toward the end of 2005)
2) Golden Fool - Hobb
3) Fool's Fate - Hobb
4) Assassin's Apprentice* - Hobb (I was on a Hobb roll - went back to re-start the series)
5) I'm a Stranger Here Myself* - Bill Bryson (Full re-read, then numerous partial re-reads as a way to unwind at bedtime)
6) Aunt Dimity and the Next of Kin - Nancy Atherton
7) A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle
8-12) The Princess Diaries, Vol 1-5 - Meg Cabot (Wow, didn't expect to love this fun fluff so much!)
13) Lamb - Christopher Moore
14) Searching for Dragons (Patricia Wrede)
15) Deerskin - Robin McKinley
16) Outlaws of Sherwood* - McKinley
17-25) Elfquest Graphic Novel Collections, Vol 1-8*, plus "Hidden Years"* - Richard and Wendy Pini
26) The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde
27) Embroidered Truths - Monica Ferris
28) Murderers Prefer Blondes - Amanda Matetsky
29) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* - Douglas Adams
30) Ella Minnow Pea - Mark Dunn
31) Murder Can Cool Off Your Affair - Selma Eichler
32) A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin
33) Ramona the Pest* - Beverly Cleary (read aloud to the girls)
34-43) Nancy Drew* - Carolyn Keene (#1 Secret of the Old Clock, #8 Nancy's Mysterious Letter, #9 The Sign of the Twisted Candles, #11 The Clue of the Broken Locket, #17 The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk, #19 The Quest of the Missing Map, #20 The Clue in the Jewel Box, #21 The Clue of the Leaning Chimney, #39 The Clue of the Dancing Puppet, #52: The Secret of the Forgotten City) - Uh, I think that's all of them. :P And yes, sometimes I just want a 'kids' chapter book to kick back with. Shaddap.
44) Danny the Champion of the World* - Roald Dahl
45) Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys* - Dave Barry (duh!)
46) The World According to Dave Barry - Barry (This is actually 3 books in a single binding.)
47) Joust* - Mercedes Lackey
48) A Clash of Kings - G.R.R. Martin (just squeaked by - finished it on 12/31 :D)
Partial: Didn't complete due to lack of interest or time
1) Royal Assassin* - Robin Hobb (I stopped at the point the story gets really wrenching; didn't feel the need to re-live that at the time, and then I never managed to get back to it)
2) Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
3) Peter and the Starcatchers - Dave Barry/Ridley Pearson (Left it out in the rain, oops, never got another copy from the library to finish it.)
4) Little Women - Louisa May Alcott Zzzzzzzzzz
5) Beezus and Ramona* - Cleary (From Beezus' POV; didn't hold the girls' attention so well)
6) Ramona the Brave* - Cleary (Currently halfway through)
7) Nancy Drew #2: The Hidden Staircase* - Keene (Nancy was too Mary-Sue-ish in the beginning; couldn't stomach it.)
8) Ballet Shoes - Noel Streatfeild.
quiet_lucidity gave it to us when we brought MiniPlu home; I'd put it away until MiniPlu got old enough, and stumbled back upon it a month or two ago. I've kept it by my bedside for 'relaxation' reading, when I haven't wanted to be caught up in Westeros' politics right before sleep. So, I'm just chipping away, little by little.
Huh. No HP this year, unless you count partial-listens of audio books, and a brief start of PoA on my trip to CA, before I decided I was more in the mood for Hitchhiker's.
Currently awaiting my attention:
Marley & Me, A Storm of Swords,
Women of the Silk and
Aerie. Need to knuckle down and finish Clash of Kings first, though, without getting sidetracked. :P
I was up at 4:10am this morning, taking Mom back to the airport. She's home safe now. No idea what I'm still doing up - I've been having trouble falling asleep lately, very frustrating. On the other hand, Will's had all week off (the college is closed between Christmas and New Year's) and I'm loving having every day feel like Saturday. Next Tues is going to suck.
Two is completely well now, aside from a minor residual sniffle/cough; however, she is still very clingy (refused point-blank to have much of anything to do with Grandma, much to my mother's disappointment) and very very whiny. OMG the whininess. I'd say 80% of what comes out of her mouth right now is a whiny protest to something. *needs earmuffs* Also, since we waited on her hand and foot and catered to her every need last week because she was SO sick, she still expects it, and throws a tantrum when we no longer comply.
Two: Water.
Me: *points* There's your cup.
Two: NO! Mommy get it!
Me: Nuh-uh. You have feet that work just fine.
Two: NOOOOOOO!
Me: Okay, so don't have water.
Two: No, water!
Repeat, ad nauseum, until she either gets sent to her room for tantruming or is ignored sufficiently long that she finally gets her own freakin' water.
Mix all this in with her age and her general stubbornness and dear God, we're never going to survive the next six months....
