This morning, at an elementary school on the other side of my town, not a very large town, there was a shooting. Twenty-seven people dead, or maybe twenty-six, I gather. Varying reports have been round all day--the initial story was that one person was dead, that being the gunman, and a teacher was injured ( Read more... )

May God have mercy on us all. Sometimes I'm not sure we deserve it.

Amen.

Yes. I've found out today that a friend of mine has lost her niece. I didn't realise her boss/friend/mentor was talking about _her_ because... well, I suppose I just couldn't believe it. I didn't know she'd family in my town.

The only good thing I can say is that we have a couple of cases of stunning heroism and self-sacrifice. That doesn't make it better, but... something. I can't find the words right now.

I have such admiration for the case of heroism that I read about, a teacher throwing herself in front of her students. I'm not sure if they survived; she didn't.

I as well.

At least some of them survived. I don't know if all of them did. The stories are all still very confused.

I'm so sorry this has happened so close to home.

Sometimes I'm not sure we deserve it.

Neither am I ... when no-one's going to do a damn thing about it. Okay, you *don't* deserve it, obviously, but still ... damn. Politicians afraid to move, to lead, for (legitimate) fear of losing their seats. Guns are so enshrined in your country a huge effort's going to be required to jump out of the rut, in my opinion. Just an outside observer.

Thank you so much.

I have to admit I was more talking about the human race as a whole when I said "we".
