Starting Over

Apr 17, 2012 00:16

Amy awoke with a start, for a moment rather dazed as to where she was. Letting out a breath she hadn't realised she had been holding in, Amy looked down at Rory who was sleeping next to her. Pushing her hair away from her face, Amy sat there for a moment. She didn't want to wake him up, but she also knew it'd be impossible to get back to sleep now ( Read more... )

A few minutes later--or several,it's hard to tell--the sounds of Rory waking and moving about the bedroom drift into the kitchen. The sound of the closet door opening and closing, the tap running in the bathroom, then heavy footsteps padding across the carpet before Rory appears in the kitchen doorway. He's got his house robe on over his pajamas, feet bare, hair sticking up in seventeen different directions, and is failing to suppress a yawn.

"Morning," he says sleepily to her back. "You're up early."

Honestly, any time before eleven on the weekends, like today, is early for Amy.

When she heard Rory getting up and ready for the day, Amy quickly wiped her face with the large sleeve of her dressing gown. Fixing coffee for the both of them, Amy curled back up into her chair, watching as the steam seeped out of the untouched mug closest to her.

Turning her head to look at him briefly, Amy nodded in reply. "Couldn't sleep." She told him dully, trying not to make it obvious that she had just been crying and there was a lot on her mind. They hadn't exactly spoken much about adjusting to this situation, it was still too new, too raw. "I made you coffee." Amy reached out to grab her own, trying subtly to cover her face with it.

"You are brilliant," he says with feeling, and pauses to kiss the top of her head as he goes past her to take his seat on the opposite side of the small table. His hands wrap around his mug almost greedily, and as he breathes in the aroma of coffee his expression settles into something like peace.

He's still an Englishman at heart and will always prefer tea, but Rory hadn't made it through medical school on Earl Grey alone. It's been a boon to him here as well--those Torchwood blokes said he couldn't very well be a nurse now (one of them had even laughed!) and judged his knowledge and experience to be the rough equivalent of a doctor just starting his residency. So they had set Rory up with the papers and documentation to place him right back in medical school, training to be an actual doctor this time around ( ... )

A forced smile tugged at her lips as she peered over her coffee mug at him briefly. Bringing her feet up onto her chair, she rested her knees against her chest as she picked absently at a loose thread of her dressing gown. She hadn't had the money to buy any of her own clothing yet, but Torchwood had been kind enough to get them some century appropriate clothing. She certainly wasn't crazy about them, but walking around in what she'd normally wear, well... She'd certainly not get a job that way ( ... )
