Excellent review -- makes me want to read the book. And I think you (and Lewis too, if that's her point too) are very right about how this sort of book tends to be "how I made my fantasy of sex work come true." Which is uplifting and arousing to read, but is not so realistic. You (and perhaps Lewis) ably make the point that the categories we have don't fit the reality, and that we have things to learn from the reality, so we need to dump preconceptions. In a way this book takes us to the idea that (nearly?) ALL work is not as it is glamorized in fictions or even fairly straightforward documentaries (-- what you said about Waffle House.) Maybe that's the human tendency to dramatize. And that's okay too. I've personally played with various sex work fantasies, aware that the realities are not that way. But, I would argue, reality comes back in always when pretending evokes real feelings. {*insert long essay on sceneing and role-playing here ( ... )
