Ok, so I know you're all clamoring for news about my time so far at Syracuse. Ok, so clamoring isn't the word. But for all those who might be even mildly interested, here's how my first day went down.
8am: Check into my dorm on Newton, er South Campus, where I will be staying for the summer while I meet people who could possibly want to get an apartment with me so I don't need to get a studio. South Campus is exactly like Newton, with the shuttle and all, but if there were more buildings that all looked like storage units on the outsides. go
here if you want to see what my room looks like...well, the mirror image of it anyway. There's a student center with laundry (yay) that is only open monday thru Friday from 8 until 3. I have class Monday thru Thursday from 10 until 2 (boo). This will be interesting...
Anyway, I move my shit in, and hop back in the car, where my parents drop me off, after goodbyes, at the Newhouse building for orientation.
9am: Stand around awkwardly making eye contact but not initiating conversation with my peers, taking the universal approach to opening hours of orientations everywhere. Grab a folder, a name tag, and get herded into a room to get my picture taken, then go on a brief tour. Another girl on the tour was in the same class at a summer program I attended after junior year: someone I completely forgot about but vaguely recognized, and her the same, so we stare at each other until she asks me. Crazy. The tour is short, then we're herded to a room to get our very special welcome gift. I figure its a t-shirt. The guy says its smaller than a bread box, so I figure its a folded or rolled t-shirt.
10am: Its an iPod Touch! Whoa! That's pretty damn cool. I've never owned any iPod, so my mind is blown. Tech guys hook up WiFi and I spend the next half hour reading cinematical.com on my new gift while people wait in line for the same.
11am: Convocation! Boring speeches, including the convocation speaker going on about the power of the interwebs...uh, no shit. Brief stand up, sit downs from faculty. I wind up sitting next to two other TRF (television, radio, film) students. Hoorah for conversation!
12pm: Lunch. Talk to this girl, also TRF, who was in my tour. She's cool. We eat lunch outside. Roast Beef Sandwich. After eating, I sit with summer program girl (Kara) briefly before we are sent back inside for...
1pm: Trivia! But about policies and shit from that handbook we were supposed to read. Lame. Gets increasingly lamer with continuation. A very long hour.
2pm: Finally, we go to meet the rest of our program! During meet and greet and whatever, I find that
this kid is in my major. I think I'm one of only a few to recognize him, but that's cool. Also, lunch girl is married. huh.
Program seems cool though. Opportunities galore and what not.
God, this is getting long. Sorry. I'm mostly doing this for posterity sake.
4pm: Get home, soaking wet. still no roommate. I get used to the idea of having none...lady at check-in said it was a possibility. Sweet. Towel off, change, play with iPod Touch. Make nachos. Find that the dials for baking are fucked...work around it, but it takes a long time and the cheese doesn't fully melt. Oh well.
8pm: Roommate walks in. Dammit! Oh well. Seems cool. Also meet another kid in TRF who apparently knows my roommate. Cool. But just as I was getting used to the idea that I could live alone without driving myself crazy (plus,no tv. Didn't have room for mine). Also, I find that Dead Like Me is all on Hulu, so that's awesome. Watch it.
11pm: Fall asleep after a very involved day. Class at 8:15. Boo
Also, my two professors are very interesting and charismatic. They could read the dictionary and I'd pay attention for the first five minutes or so. One of them ripped apart the convocation speaker. Awesome.
