Bear Encounter

I was hiking up Hiei-zan at dawn earlier this week when suddenly I heard a several loud growls and a snort. It was a black bear! I thought I was going to be attacked. Wow, it was so scary, wasn't it? You were very lucky that you weren't attacked by the bear!!

Yes, I suppose I am lucky. There have been many bear attacks in Japan this year. Have you ever seen a bear in the wild?

No, I haven't, but my living town is surrounded by mountains, so people have to be careful... I heard that someone saw a bear at the next city.

I haven't seen a bear in the wild either, but several have been sighted in a place I often visit. The people who live there are told to not walk alone and to carry things that jangle loudly, such as keys, whistles and canteens that can hang from a belt or knapsack and bang against each other as you walk. Bears, like people I guess, don't like to be caught by surprise.
