Something weird happened to me today. I was talking with someone about certain geek subcultures and my issues with them and then that person signed off before I could start a proper argument

As an aside, I first heard the song that makes up the title of your post as sung by a woman, and she changed the female pronoun to male, which made that part of the song sound oddly like it was about Jesus.
It seems to me that I've known a lot of geeks who looked down their noses at non-geeks. I like smart people, and I like people with massive superiority complexes, but I don't like people who are arrogant about their talents, or worse, their interests.
I've always placed a lot of stock in your opinion. That's unrelated to the above, but you did comment on the post, so you are owed one kind thing said by me to you.
Oh yeah, believe me- I know what you mean. My field, (computer science, that is,) is incredibly populated by people who are incredibly arrogant about their computer knowledge and skills. Not only do they look down their noses at non-geeks, they also look down on other people in the field that they consider not to be as talented or experienced as they are. It's doing my head in.
My field is exactly the opposite, at least in San Jose. Everyone's really nice to everyone else, nobody competes. It actually drives me up the wall a little because it's next to impossible to get decent criticism. Some friendly rivalry would really strengthen the creative writing concentration.
A lot of these intentional "safe havens" for the maladjusted or oddball usually wind up subverting their own intentions by becoming what they were running from in the first place. As I've adjusted my perception of people with age, I find myself moving farther away from cliques and "-isms" and, as a result, find myself better acquainted with people.
A damn shame, though not of a particular fault. When I moved out, I eschewed both television or Internet, so I'm only online occasionally. But if I see you on the next time, I'll drop you a line. :)
