Tomomasa is God. The palace is his harem. God reaches out, embroidered sleeves pulling back as fingers skim over the waist of his newest prize.
Plain robes do not hide beauty any more than prayers make a monk. Eisen is his plum-haired priest, soft like a woman and parceled up in third-rate silks. Tomomasa has spent the better part of the week picturing what lies underneath. He’ll find out tonight.
For now, he toys with silken strands, admires wide eyes that look up so adoringly. Hears footsteps falter behind him, and smirks.
“If you would refrain from such displays in my presence.” The voice is frost. Who else but the emperor?
Eisen starts and flushes the colour of mortified. Poor child. He’s shaking.
“Hush,” Tomomasa murmurs, ever so gentle. “I’ll take care of things. Wait for me.” His charge clutches him tightly for a moment, fearful. A reassuring smile; he turns and flees, back into rooms decked in marigold.
And no sooner has he left than possessive hands grip his hips. God leans backwards, sighing.
“You know he’s nothing compared to you."
Postscript: Marigolds are red and gold flowers which are said to represent envy or malice.
