They part at crossroads. The four of them exchange farewells with a mixture of tears and relief. Fai manages fond smiles for everyone. This is it, he says to himself. Their lives untangle.
Goodbye hurts. Sleeping Beauty, woken at last, vanishes in search of her ever after. The prince trails, one eye glassy, the other clouded. Both unreadable.
It’s just Fai and Kurogane now. Two men who traversed space and time. Together.
“Will you go home?” the mage asks eventually, face tilted up to watch the sky roll over. Grey and grey and grey. From the corner of his good eye, the other nods.
“I see.” He thinks of cats, of broad shoulders and blood. As stormclouds gather, he imagines stolen kisses that will never be, and happier memories he would have liked to make. The world waits for him, bleak and blustery. Miles and miles and miles.
He wants to hear, “Come with me.” It seems fools never learn. Forever waiting for impossible things, impossible words.
Kurogane leaves, taking the second route and all hope with him.
Fai stares down the third path. He takes the fourth. Rain is his sole companion as he makes his way.
