Iwai has a weakness for pink.
Once, when he was younger, he tried to make his own paint, crushing flowers with child’s fingers and dousing them with water. For a moment, there were streaks of that lovely colour, but mostly it was a sticky pulp over his hands.
When he was a little older, there was a different kind of life to bottle, but the same pink. He used it sparingly; a secretive smile was the only response to his teacher’s praise. ‘Vibrant,’ she said. Those rare canvasses always disappeared, turned to ash before the sakura could wilt and flake to brown.
The first time he saw Kaoru, Koji was at his side in an instant, cool palms pressed to flushed cheeks, demanding to know where he hurt and if he had remembered to eat that morning.
He watched that strawberry hair bounce towards him, full lips parted in enquiry.
And promptly passed out.
