The day that the small blonde boy who looked exactly like the late Holy Roman Empire appeared, not many people realized how the world would be changed forever. In fact, on that day, nobody found the nameless nation. He was alone in the forests of what would soon be considered his land, although he didn’t know it yet. He wandered the small paths between the towering trees, looking for some indication of who he was and just how he got there. But as the sun lowered itself below the horizon, ready to move on and settle somewhere beyond the forest where the blonde was so hopelessly lost, the boy decided that he should rest until morning, when he would continue his search. He curled up below a low tree canopy so that he was perfectly hidden from all danger, and slipped into slumber.
The next day, the great nation of Prussia rose with the returning sun, ready for another day of training before the next battle. He dressed quickly, expertly strapping up his casual armour as he was used to, sheathing his sword and knife and hanging his bow and quiver of arrows on his back. He would go hunting first, as a warm up. Gleefully, he ran out of his house and toward the forest. He would certainly better his last catch. A stag maybe? Or a giant boar? He parted the trees with strong arms, hacking a path through with his sharp blade.
A twig snapped from behind the albino, who slowly turned, kneeling to the ground as he did so. Stealth was the key to catching this beast. His sharp red eyes scanned the vast wooded area. In the corner of his vision, a shadow below the canopy of a tree twitched. Gilbert turned quickly, eyes now fixed on the shadow. The breathing he could hear was soft and heavy, the creature was asleep. This would make for an easy kill.
The embodiment of Prussia moved steadily towards the tree, he would take his time for the best and fastest attack in this situation, taking his skills from war and putting them into practice, albeit on a smaller scale. Unsheathing his sword and hanging the knife he had used to cut his way in on his belt, the silver headed nation gently pulled back the foliage, holding his long weapon ready to strike.
The blue eyes of the little blond boy snapped open, immediately and instinctively reacting to the threat above him. He sat up, and yelped in fear as the point of the weapon sliced the first few layers of skin on his nose. The albino leapt backwards, and losing his balance he fell onto his backside, completely undignified.
They sat in silence, staring at each other in frightened awe for a good while, before the boy plucked up some courage from the pit of his stomach and asked; “Who are you?”
The albino blinked and dusted himself down, eying the boy. “I am the awesome Prussia of course. Who the hell are you?”
Something within the boy stirred. He recognised that name… Prussia… Something about this man was very familiar to him. He didn’t understand why. He’d woken without memory in this dark forest. Still, something enticed him to tell the man who he was. Not that he knew. “I woke up here without any memories. Can you tell me who I am?”
Prussia frowned. The blonde looked just like someone, but whom? He knew it was important, but it was on the tip of his tongue, he couldn’t put a finger on it. The great nation knelt before the young boy, his ruby orbs gazing into those of cerulean blue. There was a spark of some kind, something. This was no ordinary boy, Gilbert could tell. The boy was a nation.
Gilbert grinned. He had always wanted a colony. He grasped the small hands of the boy in his large hands. “From now on, you’re my little brother! You have to do what I say, and in return I’ll teach you to fight and other important things. Okay?”
The boy nodded. “So what am I called?” He vaguely remembered having a name, but it was long and he just couldn’t remember fully.
Gilbert paused for a moment. If this boy was to be his little brother, he’d need a strong name. Something that people would fear. Something that only the awesome Prussia wouldn’t be afraid of. “Your name? Your name is Ludwig Weillschmidt.”
Ludwig smiled. He liked his new name. It made him sound big and strong like his new big brother. “So what do I do now?”
The albino looked his new brother up and down. The child had been sleeping in the dirt under a tree, and he appeared to have been doing so for a while. There was only one thing Gilbert could do. “We’re going back to your new home, my place, and we’ll give you a bath!”
Ludwig found himself being lifted up onto Gilbert’s shoulders, and soon they were out of the dark forest. The blonde could see bluest sky, wisps of cloud and rolling hills and meadows. The wind whipped around his face and hair, causing the blonde locks to float and dance like spider web strands. Ludwig’s blue eyes shone in awe. He recognised this place, this land. He knew it. He knew that it was his.
Gilbert smiled, looking up at the boy’s expression of wonderment. “So you like your place huh? I thought you would.” He let Ludwig’s eyes linger on the view just a few minutes longer, then turned around and walked towards his own home.
The large house of Prussia was an amazing sight for Ludwig. He was sure that he’d seen it before, but it still managed to leave his mouth agape. The wide corridors and huge fireplaces, extraordinarily gargantuan paintings that took up whole walls, nooks, crannies and echoing passages all entertained Ludwig’s imagination. He wasn’t a particularly adventurous boy, so he probably wouldn’t ever actually explore them, but he certainly would entertain his imagination with the idea in future.
Prussia, having placed Ludwig down as they entered the house, scooped him back up again and walked purposefully towards the bathroom. The albino didn’t have servants in his house, unlike other nations, as he believed he was awesome enough to be self-dependant, and not at all prissy like that idiot Austria. He placed the blonde down next to the tub. “I’ll be back in a second; I just got to get you some water.”
“What shall I do while you’re gone?” Ludwig asked, unsure if he should help his big brother.
Prussia pondered for a moment, then pulled out a few towels from a closet. “You get undressed, and put these around you to keep you warm while I’m gone.” He ruffled Ludwig’s hair, and then rushed out of the room. On his way to the water pump, Gilbert stopped in his room to remove his weapons and armour, and then continued on to the pump. Once he filled a large bucket of water, he carefully hauled it back over to the bathroom. He found Ludwig sat by the tub, swathed in the towels and staring intently out of the small window.
“Bruder? Are you okay?” Gilbert hung the bucket above the fireplace and turned to look at his brother, slightly concerned.
Ludwig shook himself awake and nodded. “Ja, it’s just…” he looked away again. “I just had the most peculiar memory.”
Gilbert cocked his head to the side, then lit the fire beneath the bucket. “What was it?”
The blonde blinked. “I’m not really sure. It comes back in small flashes.” He looked up at Gilbert. “We were at war.”
This shocked Prussia. Could this boy be? No. He couldn’t. And if he was the Holy Roman Empire, then he wouldn’t be allowed to remember. There was too much pain there for a boy of Ludwig’s age. “You should probably forget it bruder. Your mind was probably playing tricks on you.” The albino watched the bucket as the water heated.
Ludwig was confused by Prussia’s response. Still, his big brother had told him to forget it, so he would. “Bruder?” he asked.
“Ja?” Prussia replied, still worrying about the memories as he poured the warm water into the tub.
“Am I a great nation like you?”
The albino ran a pale hand through his silvery hair, unsure of how to answer. If you are who I think you are… then yes, you were. “Not yet,” he replied, and picked up a bar of soap from the side, chucking it into the tub, “But you will be.”
Ludwig smiled. “Just like big bruder then.” He neatly folded the towels up, and climbed into the tub. The warm soapy water soothed his young naked body, and he began to scrub away all the dirt on his blemished skin. Bubbles soon began to rise on the water’s surface.
Gilbert watched the blonde intently, smiling. It didn’t matter what had happened in the past. He was going to protect this new nation with all his heart. He laughed to himself. He was turning into such a sap.
Suddenly, Ludwig felt himself get pushed under the water. He spluttered as he rose to the surface, frowning. “Bruder!”
Gilbert was in hysterics, rolling about on the floor beside the bath. “You should have seen your face! Mein Gott!”
Ludwig growled at Gilbert. “What on earth did you do that for?” He wasn’t amused in the slightest.
Gilbert calmed down and smiled. “You needed to wash your face bruderlein~” he hummed, rubbing soap through the honey and straw locks of Ludwig. Mountains of bubbles foamed up on the boy’s head. Gilbert scooped up a little on his finger and popped it on Ludwig’s nose, before kissing his forehead.
Ludwig blushed, and looked up questioningly at the albino. Gilbert simply smirked and got up from the floor. “You get clean now. Call for me when you’re done.”
The silver-haired nation swept from the room quickly. He needed to speak with that aristocrat about this situation. Taking on glance back at the boy in the tub with his deep ruby eyes, he muttered, “I will protect you from now on… Germany…”
