Extra note:
For who's interested to know...

History:

  • Nearly 150 years ago Vittorio Emanuele II took for himself and his descendants the title of King of Italy. This announcement is considered what signed the birth of Italy, though its borders weren't the same as they're now (it still missed some bits). The existence of Italy however won't be immediately recognized by the other countries...
  • There had been assorted discussions about the announcement. First many didn't like the idea that Vittorio Emanuele would remain II and not become I (Milan made a rather funny strip in which Meneghino, a character of the Commedia dell'Arte that represents Milan, wanted to go to Tourin to see if it's true in Tourin people start counting from 2 and not from 1). Also some would have preferred him to be the king 'of the Italians' and not 'of Italy'.
  • Italy is represented in the female form because real Italy is represented by the allegorical figure of the Italia Turrita, a beautiful woman with a crown shaped like the towers its cities, whose origins seem to be medieval. Back on medieval time one of the most notable features of Italy was it had a lot of cities very close to each other and rather powerful. Due to this Italy was als nicknamed '100 cities' country'.
  • The whole draw is also a representation of Italy's situation at the time. While North Italy is happy and feel accomplished, you can see how South Italy looks doubtful. In fact, short after, it will start a civil war between north and south, called for political reasons, 'war against the brigantage' -_-. The clothes the Italys wear are one the mirror version of the other to reflect the differences that marked them although they were now the same country. The flag that should have united them, actually sign a line of division, casting a shadow on South Italy and hiding the joined curls of the two that were supposed to form a hearth. Also, North Italy is trying to pull South Italy toward the opposite direction in which south Italy was going without even realizing it. In addition such a huge flag is a considerble weight for both of them. You can easily picture how hard it'll be to carry it when the 'disagreements' will start... All in all the kingdom of Italy didn't start under the best basis... -_-
