I'd say it's a combination. We learn by experience - and, to a degree, teachings - and thus acquire knowledge. This in turn enables us to apply our reason to new situations, comparing them to what we already know and basing our judgement on the outcomes of these past experiences.

And I'd appreciate it very much if you also put your body to use for once, not just your mind!
