Date: March. 23
Characters: The Master, open
Location: Medical Lab, Hallway
Summary: The Master installs what will soon become a rift in time-space where no one is likely to look for it. Massive infodump exposition followed by gratuitous room for interaction ftw?
Warnings: None
On the list of things the Master had not planned to do ever again, somewhere near the top sat all instances of looking directly into the time vortex. Somewhere above that still was opening the rift by his own hand. His first memory of the infinite expanse, its structure and chaos, still echoed in his head. There were few things that made the Master nervous, and this was one of them.
And yet, here the universe seemed so much more confined. Perhaps it was a result of the isolation here, among all of these humans, but time also seemed not itself. The web, controlled and monitored in the closest detail, was loose here. Maybe this was what made him...
He quickly dismissed the notion of "bravery" from his mind. This was a matter of pragmatism. More important, far more important things needed doing elsewhere, and if there was not an easy way off of this asteroid, there was a slightly longer way round. And this, not some narrative conceit of finally moving beyond one haunted moment, was the reason he had quietly stripped out the back of the medical lab's refrigerator, replacing the motor and most of the cooling mechanisms with an artron energy converter, semi-fission generator, and the ring that would contain the rift once it was open. Remarkably, this allowed for a fully-functioning refrigerator as well, though any items left inside would be likely to suffer the effects of temporal radiation and could develop sentience up to seventeen times more quickly than under normal refrigeration (it would also be completely inhospitable to milk, but as there were no cows or goats, the Master didn't see that as a likely problem).
He fitted the refrigerator back into place along the wall. The converter would need several days to warm up and gather enough power to open the rift. It would cause some substantial drain on the colony's power at that point, but the Master had hedged his bet against the lab being wired to support a greater power drain than most places in the colony, save for the machine shop which was, unfortunately of late, rather occupied. In any event, the project was now fully in motion. Satisfied with the day's work the Master checked the fridge again for any signs of his tampering, then stepped out into the hallway, closing the bulkhead door behind him and setting off towards the rec room with a spring in his step.
