Apr 04, 2010 21:20

Date: April 4
Characters: The Master, open to any others
Location: It's complicated. Infirmary/Medical Lab, though, given the situation, a separate comment thread for the Control Room, involving people other than the Master, seems reasonable.
Summary: Time-space shenanigans! The Master waits for the rift to open.
Warnings: None at the moment.

We apologise for the inconvenience. )

As the Master predicted, the sudden increase in power usage is indeed quite noticeable. As the system reaches critical, there is a colony-wide blackout, leaving only the most essential systems running: the ISES computer, ventilation, cooling, and so on, as well as the dim, emergency night-lights.

Also as the Master predicted (isn't that usually the case?), when the lights went out, Robin went straight to the Control Room, moving quickly in the darkness without bothering to reach for a flashlight. He let out a sigh of relief as he entered the control room and saw the blinking lights of the ISES computer banks, indicating that the computer was still alive and that at least some power still remained in the colony.

Robin hurried over to the console. He pressed the power button and his face was bathed in the pale glow from the screen. He touched the ISES User Interface icon, tapping his fingers impatiently in the couple of seconds it took for the software to activate.

"Hello, and thank you for activating the Icelus Station Essential Systems User Interface. You may call me ISES. How may I be of assistance?" came the calm, soothing voice of the virtual intelligence software.

"Isis, all the lights have gone out. What's going on? Do you know what's causing this?" he asked urgently.

"A large, abrupt power drain has exceeded the capacity of the electrical grid. Power has been temporarily interrupted for nonessential systems."

James was in the library when the lights went out figuratively. He knew from the last few weeks where things were in the room but he still wound up stumbling into surfaces.

He made it to the door and it slowly opened.

His first thought was to go to the control room, that was the main function of the rock was in it?

"Great," Robin replied to Isis with dry sarcasm. "Then I guess-" He broke off, hearing someone approaching the entrance of the control room from the corridor. He fished for the flashlight in his utility belt, even as he guessed by the shape and size of the silhouette in the doorway who it was. "James?" he called out, switching the flashlight on and aiming it towards the doorway. Yep.

"Hey," he greeted. "Isis says the lights should come back on in a minute or two." He turned back to the console. "Isis, what's causing the power drain? Where's it located?"

"The source of the power drain is an appliance outlet in the medical laboratory, outlet serial number 362355229623710666-ME8."

Robin raised an eyebrow. "The med lab? What could be in the med lab? ...Rhetorical, Isis, don't answer that." He pondered the ridiculous serial number for a moment, then shook his head. There wasn't much in the med lab, it couldn't be that hard to track down, whatever it was. He huffed a sigh, turning to James. "I'm gonna go check this out, you coming with, James?"

One thing the Master hadn't predicted, however, was blacking out the entire colony. That made his little experiment quite a lot more obvious than he would've liked. Now he'd have to expect a larger number of people coming to nose around.

As he pondered on whether to change his plans for whoever came to investigate, he slid from the bed and quickly made his way into the lab. He could sense that the rift was open, but he wanted to ensure that the device wouldn't continue to overload the system once power was restored. After a quick look around, and a peek inside the fridge where he'd recently stashed the original TARDIS lever, he was satisfied and returned to the infirmary, hoping to find a casual place to wait before anyone else arrived.

Robin led the way into the infirmary, using it as a shortcut on his way to the med lab (good thing he's so predictable). He made a beeline towards the door of the examination room, then paused mid-stride, turning towards the dark figure in the room and flicking his flashlight up. "...Cyril?"

James followed closely. He didn't want to lose Robin in the near darkness. He nearly ran over Robin when he stopped and looked at Cyril.

He squinted into the beam of the flashlight, then put a hand up to block it and grinned. "Robin! And," he paused, trying to make out the silhouette behind him. "James May?" he guessed. It wasn't a risky guess--there weren't that many people to choose from. "Did either of you bring a voltmeter?"
