I've been going through a similar dilemma for years, except that in my case, my friends are mainly older than me. I know for me it's insecurity that's playing in and if it's the same for you, don't allow yourself to be consumed by it. Then you'll be like me and feel alone even if you're surrounded by people you consider friends. :/

My friends are mainly younger. It takes effort for me to get along with someone older than me.
