We finally returned to Hinkey Summit, actually making it up and over the top with no flat tires this time. We had a very enjoyable drive and the altitude (about 8,000 feet) provided a welcome relief from the heat in town.
Speaking of being in town, the clouds in Winnemucca were very cool looking the night before.
Back to the trip. Much of the scenery on the way up looks like this. The wildflowers are mostly gone, but it's still beautiful. The trail is bumpy and rocky, but does not require a lot of ground clearance, much less four wheel drive.
Past the summit we found an alpine forest-like area with aspens and rutty trails. It was a little narrow for a pick up but easy for the buggy. Later, a turn off led to a vacant Lye Creek Campground, a perfect place for us to cooler of sandwiches and drinks.
I think it's smiling.
We drove through to the other side, heading back to the highway but about forty miles from where we left it. We paused at a perfect location to watch the sunset. The terrain almost didn't look real. Oh yeah, I forgot:
The buggy enjoyed watching it too.
With a different exposure value, the haze and fleeing light gave the terrain a dreamy quality.
