I think nataly is an undiscovered literary genius.

Chickens = ...rocks?
IT MAKES SENSE! see, chickens are cocks, and that rhymes with rocks, so the internal rhyme of the symbolic language is meant to suggest a feminist reading in which all the male cocks can fly away, while the females are left on the ground where they get sexed all the time. And so, the author's purpose was to convey how max's sexism, while being a result of his insecurities, (and contributing to the loneliness which led to his insecurity in a massive paradox) was an ultimately negative force on the world, just as were the female-subjecting customs embedded in our society up until just a few decades ago, as highlighted by 19th century novelist Jane Austen.
