Outside Jono's Tent, Glacia, Thursday Evening Fandom Time

Jun 20, 2013 18:38

Jonothon knew he had to pace himself.

Logically, anyhow, Jonothon knew he had to pace himself. He'd been pushing himself for days now, since coming back from the island, and on more than one occasion he'd forgotten to eat. He wasn't even going to bother trying to sleep. He knew what happened when he slept, and for as much as he enjoyed dreaming ( Read more... )

Karla hadn't been sure what Jono had gone through in Fandom (and the trip back to the army, which she knew of all too well), so she'd given him a week to sort himself out. But as days went by and he only got more wound up, she'd decided that enough was e-bloody-nough.

It was time to figure out what was going on.

"Wanna be less crazy for a sec and talk to me?"

...In her own special "Karla is dealing with Jono" way.

Jonothon was going to take that 'crazy' comment and file it away somewhere in the back of his head under 'Karla being Karla.' That seemed like a good place for it. The sort of place that wouldn't get his back up, because he really wasn't up for biting back his temper right now.

"Busy. Is it important?"

"I just figured you'd want to know that we've decided to let you take point," Karla said. Her tone was casual, almost careless, but her attention was completely, tightly focused on Jono. "With the way your eyes have been glowing lately, we thought you'd make an excellent substitution for headlights."

Some people decide to come over and gently prod Jono into talking about what was going on. Karla was going to keep pushing until Jono finally reacted. It sounded harsh, yes, but she'd been dealing with him for years now.

"Useful." Jonothon's focus remained tightly directed to the maps laid out before him. His voice was even, his tone hadn't changed at all. "If we want them to see us coming."

Yeul could not say why she felt like calling the Professor. She did not have any particular reason to do so except for the fact that there was no reason to not.

Which, for her, was reason enough.

She dialed his number and waited.

So, it was safe to say that Jono was a little tense. He hadn't slept in days, either, at least not properly...

Tense. Or jumpy. Either way, there were practically sparks at the corners of his eyes when his phone rang in his pocket, and the only reason nobody was going to have to peel him from a tree branch was that he hadn't been wearing his collar at the time.

At least answering his phone managed to pull his attention from the maps for a moment? That was an accomplishment.

"Starsmore."

... It was sort of like hello. Ish.

Well... that changed the cheerful hello that had been on her lips just in case he answered.

She hesitated a moment and then decided that, given his tone of voice, perhaps calling him as she usually did would not be the best.

Yeul did not think she would be the student to his teacher with a conversation opener like the one he'd given her. And perhaps it was not appropriate in any case, when they were not student and teacher for the moment.

"Hello, Jonothon," Yeul said softly.

There was a moment of silence at the other end of the line while Jonothon forcibly re-calibrated his headspace, dragging his mind away from maps and that particular sort of distraction, and attempting to haul it into this phone call.

"... Yeul," he replied, after that hesitation was through. "Er... Hello."

People tended to say more than that, didn't they?

"To what do I owe the pleasure of this call, luv?"

Okay, so, the trip back had still been hilarious. But wow, Jono needed to relax.

So maybe apple-mead would help?

"Drink, guy?"

"I shouldn't," Jono replied, barely glancing up from his maps to see who it was who had come to visit. "I had my drinking day, there's work to do, now. Much as I wish they would, these maps aren't going to memorize themselves."

He was pretty deep in soldier mode at the moment. A lot of that was, perhaps, that he didn't think he could afford to be anything but, at this point.

"This stuff's pretty low-proof," Dinah said, voice a little coaxing. "'Sides, our people traded for it. Gotta see if it was a good idea." She peered at the maps. "Can I help?"

"Not unless you can grant me a photographic memory along with that mead," Jonothon replied, sounding a little strained. "I need to know these. Two weeks to Sidra, and we'll be lucky if we make it out of the city with our heads still on our shoulders, you know."

Momoko stomped her way into Jono's field of vision. "Hand it over."

"It?"

Jono barely glanced up at that. There was an 'it?' He was supposed to be unhanding that 'it' for some reason or other? That was absurd. He had things to do.

"The map. You've been staring at it long enough. It's getting late and you're scaring people."

"Scaring people," Jonothon echoed, frowning faintly down at the map. "I wasn't aware there was anything particularly terrifying about studying maps."

Yes, he was being obtuse on purpose. Because Jono.
