Have you read by Tracy Kidder? It's about a doctor who, among other great deeds, set up a hospital in Haiti. I recommend it highly.

Yeah dude! Paul Farmer is my hero.

I actually first heard about him when I read the Kidder book, which I discovered in a footnote in 'The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time' by Jeff Sachs. Sachs is a world-famous economist who helped Poland and Bolivia turn their economies around, and has been pushing hard for complete debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative.

Instead of the old Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs), which required aid recipients to slash funding for healthcare and education, the HIPC program requires increased funding and strong oversight for such things.

If you're into the whole Haiti / human rights / debt cancellation thing, another AMAZING book is "The Uses of Haiti" co-written by Paul Farmer and Noam Chomsky.
