Apocalyptothon 2014 Fandoms

First of all, a few notes. There will be a bit of a gap between the reveal of the winning fandoms and the sign-ups. This should give everybody some time to think about what they'd like to request as well as catch up on any fandoms they might want to write. It also gives you time to inform your friends and fellow fans who might want to join in ( Read more... )

Was looking for some clarification on how the "any verse" fandoms were going to be handled. I can see it might be a problem if someone wanted to offer Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, but had never watched Universe - could they be matched with someone who specifically wanted Universe? I would imagine too that there are folks who never watched all of the various forms of Trek, or followed all the forms of Marvel. Seems that lumping things together would seriously restrict what people feel comfortable offering (and requesting), or am I misunderstanding how it works?

I'm sorry for any confusion! As it was done in the past, listing a broader fandom as "Stargate - Any Universe" is understood to mean SG1, Atlantis, Universe. I will update the list of fandoms to try to clear up any misunderstandings!

I probably missed this in the rules, but, how many requests and offers will we have to make to sign-up?

You can make between 3-5 requests and at least 5 offers. You can offer to write as many of the fandoms as you think you can, but it must be a minimum of 5.

You might want to split A Song of Ice and Fire and the HBO series Game of Thrones, because they differ in a number of ways. It's rather like the difference between Tolkien's The Hobbit and Peter Jackson's three Hobbit movies. Same basic story, but a lot got changed in translation.

Likewise, the "Star Trek (any 'verse)" thing seems like more of a hindrance than a help. That means that someone who knows only TOS and Deep Space Nine could get matched with someone who wants TNG fic, while the TNG fan could get matched with someone who wants AOS, Enterprise or Voyager. The same goes for Doctor Who--a fan of Classic Who could be matched with a fan of New Who, the Big Finish Audio Dramas, the tie-in books, the Virgin Adventures books, the Eighth Doctor Adventures books, the comic books, the video games, or the Doctor Who musical parody.

With franchises so large and (in at least two cases) so varied, I think that "any 'verse" might turn out to be a bit of a problem.

As apocalypsos and soundingsea have done in the past, they put (for example) "Star Trek (any 'verse)" on the list of fandoms, but that doesn't mean you can only, request or offer only "Star Trek." You can offer/request the more general, broad "Star Trek" which would mean anything under that umbrella, or you can offer/request any of the fandoms that fall under that umbrella - TNG, AOS, DS9, Enterprise, Voyager, Animated Series, TOS, etc. Does that make more sense? I will edit the list to make it a bit more clear.

Why not hold sign-ups/prompts on LJ so that people can specify which version of a fandom they can write/which fandom they want to request so that matching can be more accurate, and once matching is completed, then move it all to AO3?

Actually, matching is a lot easier on AO3. For example people are allowed to choose the more specific "Stargate Atlantis" tag or the more general (in case they love every spin off of the original) "Stargate".
