a/n : something i just felt like writing. it's not a happy story and i'm not sure it's a sad piece either, rofl to be honest, not sure what it is at all. it's kind of odd and might not make sense either because i'm not entirely sure what i wrote myself. takes place during now basically and interpret it any which way you want
Changmin dreams often of times when the Rising Gods of the East are four and not five.
And the first one he misses is Park Yoochun. The fifth boy from America never arrives and instead of two rappers there is only Yunho. Their debut on stage as Xiah, Youngwoong, Choikang and U-know goes off without a hitch, vocals as polished as expected from a boy band and movements coordinated and sharp befitting their many years as trainees.
There's no mate to Jaejoong's soul but he's never been one to stay home, finding Hyun-joong and others to go out with him. There's only four bowls now instead of five, the fifth in their matching set broken or lost somewhere after one of their many moves. Junsu loses his bestaw and despite no longer having the Yoo- to attach his -Su to, his eu kang kangs are still heard throughout the dorms. Yunho wakes up ten minutes later than he normally would, one less member for him to wake and one less pot of coffee to brew. And since there's no one there to drink it, the beans are thrown a year after its expiration date. There's no partner in crime when Changmin teases Junsu now so he does it alone and there's no Micky to his Minnie but it's not like Changmin can tell.
And two years later, Dong Bang Shin Ki still sweeps all the awards and wins all the Daesangs there are to win and they're on their way to being hailed as the best idol group in of all Asia.
Their lead singer is next. One raven-haired Kim Jaejoong never makes it into their group but debuts with another one called the Four Seasons a month later, Yunho taken out of that to lead the Dong Bangs while Eunhyuk is added to the Seasons as the resident dancer. Their debut doesn't go as smoothly this time and their harmonies don't work quite as well together but there's Junsu in the middle of it all, singing like he was born to and no one can overlook them as another idol group.
Yoochun doesn't drink as much nor does he smoke and it's surprising how smooth his voice is still even now in the fourth year since their debut. There's no more guttural moans or lip-syncing of "O" 正.反.合 now that he can get through the song without having a partial asthma attack. Junsu goes from the best singer of the group to the lead and unsurprisingly gets the most lines out all their songs to sing. He doesn't have a hyung to sleep with in his room anymore but he still fills the empty bed next to his with random clothes, finding it awkward and off when it's bare. The infamous Yunjae/Jaeho is no longer a possibility and so Yunho takes to touching Changmin more and more, large hands fitted around soft thighs every chance he gets. He's missing a best friend but that's okay because he finds love instead. Changmin cries to no one but the wall during his first breakup, huddled in his room alone until Yoochun eventually gets in and takes him out to eat, a bottle of soju on the side that neither of them touch.
And four years later, Dong Bang Shin Ki still makes it to the top of the Japanese charts with Purple Line, their first number ranking single on the Oricon charts. They're being hailed as the best idol group of all Asia.
Sexy charisma Kim Junsu never makes it into the group either. His voice doesn't break on him and he debuts solo alongside Boa just like it was planned. He becomes their sunbae and the four greet him with a smile and polite nod each time instead of a friendly punch to the shoulder and raunchy joke.
Now Yunho's new oldest best friend he talks about most in interviews is Jaejoong, the hyung that had passed the leadership responsibility to him. And he alone remains as the one in the band who can actually dance. Yoochun walks around aimlessly sometimes and takes to staying in his room to compose music alone. There's no one for him and Changmin to pick on so they pick on each other, the two of them holed in the room and playing with random things they don't really find funny. The X-box in the living room is taken over by Yunho and Changmin, the two dueling it out on games that they both suck at, betting to see who loses first. And almost by default because he's the youngest, Changmin gets the cute role, one that he sheds a year later in favor of his snarky wit anyway. Jaejoong takes to driving alone at night with no one in the seat next to him. Sometimes Yoochun tags along and sometimes it's just another one of his friends. There's less laughter in their household and the mood in their interviews are more serious and never as fun.
And five years later, Dong Bang Shin Ki's fanclub Cassiopeia reaches 800,000 in number and they're still hailed as the best idol group of all Asia.
Follow suit with that, the one that is left out next is their leader. Yunho never even auditions for SM Entertainment, missing the bus to Seoul after his close childhood friend dies from a sudden car crash. He stays with his dancing group instead and three months later tries out and successfully enters into the YG family. No one is publicly announced as their leader and after a few months of secretly trying out Jaejoong for it, the company decides for them to debut leaderless, a collective group of young idols working together as their new gimmick. They're missing the low baritone from their harmonies but Changmin is merely told to sing an octave lower.
Jaejoong becomes the hyung for real now and he's looked to silently leading the group because despite all that is said, he's still the oldest. He starts to go out a little more than he probably would because when the pressure becomes too much, there's no one there to share the burden and for him to lean on in return. Yoochun ends up rooming with Changmin in Japan, the two of them watching movies and sometimes ending up sitting in the living room because the master room still seems too big with the two of them in it. Junsu stays until the late hours of the evening in dancer rehearsal because no one is there to tell him to leave and to confirm he knows all the moves in and out. And when there's no hand for him to hold onto for strength, Changmin's walls only build higher. There's no comforting hugs and big smiles waiting for them behind the doors of their dorm.
And still, five years later, Dong Bang Shin Ki with their more than successful Jumon-Mirotic Korean comeback is hailed as the idol group of all Asia.
Changmin doesn't dream of himself being the missing member until it's too late for such dreams. Like Yunho, he never makes it to the auditions because support from his father never comes. He reads about the infamous boy band taking South Korea by storm and listens to their music when his younger sisters start to fangirl them. He recognizes their faces soon enough because of the posters posted all across their walls.
The new magnae of the group is now Junsu and he welcomes the role with open arms, smiling and hamming it up for the cameras, face always tilted with the cutest smiles ready. Yoochun winds up with one less friend to take out on adventures with and finds himself sleeping alone in the living room for a long time before he gets Junsu to move out. Jaejoong cooks for one less and he no longer has someone to test out new food on when Yoochun tires of eating alone. Yunho falls in love with a pretty girl he meets in Japan, tall and with pale skin. She smiles for him behind closed doors, allows him take care of her and tells him he's needed and lets him hug her when he needs it more for himself than anything.
And when six years later three members of Dong Bang Shin Ki announce their lawsuit and subsequent plans to end their contract with their management company, Changmin finds himself wishing the Rising Gods of the East were four and not five.
Because you can't miss what you never had in the first place.
