newly old

since i don't seem to have much to say these days in the realm of poetry (somewhat surprisingly), here's some older stuff. (it turns out to be rather difficult to find old poems that i want to share - no longer being in the headspace in which i wrote them, i tend to look at them more critically.)

"silent memories" (circa 1997)

Cold silent outside
floating in a sea
of fluff
Thoughts drift
as snow
My mind takes me back
unwilling
to bittersweet winter
you
Wrapped in overstuffed parka
you
laugh condensing in air
as only your laugh can
you and I
Navigating dangerous roads
without a care
except each other
and you
in the dark grey morn
tired early smile
christmas snowman ring present
thoughts always fixed on you
warm in that coat and
those socks and my arms
and then
thaw

"unable to sleep, version 2" (9/15/05)
touching you
experiencing you
on that hot night in Boulder
was disappointing
for some
what?
reason
something wasn't right
and so i
stopped
and i
hated
that
and pondered
why
but i'd built you up so much
abstracted to a perfect you
that the real
you
could not compete

this time
touching you
experiencing you
reveling in you
was sublime
because
i knew
know
it's the true you
not the abstract
the real
amazing
incomparable
you
whom i love.
