Something I've often mentioned and thought about, and advice I wish I had gotten earlier (but it's never too late ;) )

Yes, yes, yes. I always say "I wish I could have my own woodshop", but perhaps I should put my money where my mouth is, when I have money to put where my mouth is. ;)
I love mechanics and making things. I love knowing how to fix little things on my car, owning a user's manual, and being able to create something by hand. It would be such a shame to see the next generation lose this. It's so valuable.

It is the little pieces of self-reliance and the joys of being able to 'do things yourself' that are really lacking. I think their absence has lead to a very passive mentality.

An awesome quote and something to strive for.

Ya know... I agee insofar that we all should posess the KNOWLEDGE of how to butcher/plumb/hardwire/construct HOWEVER 5 weeks into my, let's face it, well-paying blue collar job, I'm ready to kill... bodily hauled my LD aside and DEMANDED that he raise my IQ by discussing matters completely irrelevant to the show.
(it felt sooooo good to speculate whether Harper's calling an election within 4 months)

we're the only two people who CAN discuss issues outside of "where does this go" and "why didn't X-ray build that first! Oh what a fuck up!" I feel my brain atrophying... seriously

This is true...but I think the advice was to possess both...to have both an 'intellectual' field as well as a set of tradeskills. I see your point, but one can also argue that the cubicle-locked tech worker is suffering slow brain-death also despite being a 'knowledge worker'.
