So I'm housesitting this week for a coworker and her family while they're on vacation. Nice place, much closer to work than where I'm at now, and she's the closest person I have at work, so I'm happy to help water plants, take care of a hamster, and fend off the hordes of burglars and their attempts to burgle. I wouldn't stress about it. I can see the angst though. When I housesat for my mom and dad I always bought all my own food. When I hire someone to housesit for me though I plan to let them have free reign as long as they clean up and let me know what they ate/drank.

Yeah, it's not a big concern, but it's one of those many social gray areas. I'd apply fuzzy logic instead - but that depends on a bank of experience in this regard, which I am still acquiring.
