What's in a name?

“Have you wondered,” James asked Lily, “what her nickname might be?”

Lily smiled and struggled onto her side to face James. “Prongs the second?”

“Don’t be silly,” James retorted, the excited tone in his voice he had when he thought about the fact that soon - very soon - they would actually have another person here in their flat with them and be a family. “Girls don’t have prongs. That’s a boy thing.”

“I know!” Lily agreed, nodding tiny little nods in a very positive manner.

“What do you think of Rebecca?”

“Sounds a bit girly to me. What about Richard?”

“Lily Potter,” James exclaimed softly, lifting the covers to look at what was now a very large bump on the front of his wife. “That is no boy.”

At the feel of James’s hand resting on her stomach the baby kicked. “That’s where Muggles would disagree,” she replied. “If you were a Muggle father and had just got kicked like that you’d be congratulating yourself on having fathered the next England team striker.”

“Would I?” James asked.

“You would.”

“Muggle fathers want boys?”

“They want footballers. So yes, basically they want boys.” Lily’s voice was light hearted; she guessed that as many fathers wanted girls as wanted boys really. It was fun to tease James though, and he was so determined that their baby would be a girl.

“See that’s where we’re so much further forward with our thinking.”

“We are?”

“Yes! Quidditch players can be male or female. Think of the number of famous female Quidditch players there are. Muggles don’t have famous female football players.” His statement was as much a question as anything.

“No. They don’t, and to be honest I can’t think of any famous male or female Quidditch players, so I’ll take your word for it. If that’s okay?”

“We did ought to think of names though soon.”

“Yes. I suppose we did.” Lily laid her hand on top of James’s as it rested where the baby was still kicking him. “Boys and girls names.”

“What do you think of Sarah?” James asked.

“Sarah … hmmm, it’s not bad. Sarah Potter. It works.”

“Sarah Lily Potter, after her mum.”

“And for a boy?”

“You pick for a boy Lil,” James suggested, moving to press a kiss to her lips.

“Harry?”

“Harry? Yeah, I like that. Harry Potter.”

“Harry James Potter,” Lily repeated. “After his dad.”

“So,” James wriggled down the bed a little until his head was level with where their baby was. “Are you Sarah, or Harry?”

“Harry,” Lily laughed as the child kicked her in agreement.

“We’ll know soon.”

“We will. Not long now.”

“Lil -“

“Hmmm?” Lily asked, sensing a question in James’s use of her name.

He moved his head around to look up towards her, his head still resting lightly on their baby. “Does it worry you?”

“What?” There was a lot to worry her, to worry them. Ever since they’d heard about the prophecy it had been hard not to worry.

“You know. When the baby comes out.”

“The birth?”

James nodded and moved back up the bed, his head next to hers on her pillow. “I mean, it’s going to hurt a bit. Isn’t it?”

Lily smiled. “Yes, it’ll hurt a bit. But it’s hard to imagine what it’s going to be like. It’s not all wine and roses now though. When he sits on my bladder, or elbows me in my kidneys, or pushes his feet up into my lungs. All that hurts.”

“But,” James winced. “He seems quite big and he’s got to get out through somewhere a good bit smaller.”

“You said he.”

“I meant she.”

“Plenty of other women have had babies. And gone on to have more.”

“I suppose.”

“You’ll be there. The whole time.”

“Of course.”

“Then I’ll be fine. Whatever.”

James slipped back under the covers and pulled Lily to him. Of course he’d be there the whole time and usually he’d agree that they could get through anything together. Something inside of him wasn’t sure it was going to be quite that easy this time. Something that wasn’t going to be convinced until he actually found out.
