Hands, knees and bumpsadaisy

“Was that the door?”

James looked up from the floor where he was sitting and playing a game with Harry. “What?”

“It sounded like the door. Would you check please? My hands are filthy.”

James chuckled. They’d worked so hard at fitting into the mainly Muggle suburb of London where their flat was that they’d started doing more things the Muggle way than was strictly necessary. “No problem.”

Lily moved out of sight of the door and used a wandless charm to clean her hands before walking from the kitchen, at the opposite end of the hallway, towards the front door. “Guess who’ll be pleased to see you,” she welcomed the large shaggy black dog who ambled in, wagging his tail quickly from side to side. “Harry,” she called, her arms out, as their small son wandered towards the hallway too. “Come and see.”

As always at the sight of his godfather, in whatever form he turned up in, Harry beamed as Padfoot lumbered over to him and nudged him gently.

“Time for a ride?” James suggested to his son and lifted him onto the dog’s back where a security charm kept him from falling off as Padfoot trotted around their small flat.

“Well,” Sirius said after he’d transformed back. “I get invited in but no mention of a bowl of water. Standards are slipping, mate!”

From her place in the kitchen Lily listened as the two men talked, and played with Harry at the same time. It was hard not to smile widely when Harry squealed with pleasure. She could imagine his little pudgy hands reaching out for his dad or his uncle, his green eyes - just like hers, poor boy - shining with delight.

“So what brought Padfoot to our door?”

“A bowl of water,” Sirius teased.

“Lil,” James shouted. “Have we still got that manky old dog’s bowl?” Turning back to Sirius he looked and raised an eyebrow expectantly, guessing that there was a story in there somewhere. “Come on mate. Mangy mutts don’t just turn up on respectable people’s doorsteps for no reason.”

“”And your point is?”

She heard them both laugh and Harry join in.

“There was this bird in the park,” Sirius started, “walking her dog.”

“Yeah?” James asked, sounding interested.

“So I transformed and went chasing after them.”

“Did she make a fuss of you? Pat you on the head, and smooth your hair from your eyes before stroking you down the side telling you how lovely you were?”

“Err, no.”

“No?”

Lily recognised the puzzled tone of James’s question.

“The dog wasn’t a dog.”

“Like you’re not a dog?”

“No, like I’m a dog and she was a bitch. A bitch in season. A bitch in season whose owner didn’t want this mangy old mutt - as you put it - having its wicked way with her.”

“James?” Lily asked quietly in the dark of the night.

“What?” he whispered back, turning over onto his side and casting a lumos .

“What Sirius said about being in the park.”

“You were listening, Lil?”

“Of course I was. Only, it made me think.”

“About dogs and bitches? It’s much the same as us Lil.”

“No. Not dogs and bitches. Stags and … stagesses.”

“The male is a stag, the female is a doe,” James reminded her. “But what about them?”

“Do you ever get attracted to a doe, when you’re a stag?”

“Not exactly. But it’s different.”

“Not much the same as us then?”

“It’s like Sirius said. When you’re an animal you get that smell in your nose and there’s little you can do about it.”

“So do you …” she used her hand to show what she meant and felt pleased when James did that smile he always did when she was touching him like that.

“Yes Lily,” James confirmed. “And let me tell you something.”

Lily giggled as he changed position to repay her attentions. “What?”

“Running with that bouncing off your knees all night is enough to leave bruises.”

“All night?” She pulled him closer.

“All night. I’ll show you if you want.”

“To your knees?”

James nodded.

“Really?”

“Do you want to see?”

Lily laughed.
