Why do people think the way they do?

A while back, someone recommended that I read a Scienterrific American article on photo-tampering (see this, and this, and this. I finally did, and it kind of blew me away - not the article itself (which was good), but the realization that people -- including me -- treat photographs as trustworthy ( Read more... )

an interesting and vaguely related field is using a photograph to encrypt information while showing some Innocent scene.

Yep, steganography will become more and more common as digital images passed around via digital means becomes more common. Heck with digital TV, it's possible to send it across the air in a completely hidden manner.

I think we're visual creatures, and it's that "I believe what's right before my eyes!" thing...

The worry for me is that in photography, we're reaching the scary days of the Good Fact v. True Fact.

And the Good Facts are winning.
