Proper use of quotes

I got an envelope in the mail recently trying to get me to sign up for some magazine. As part of their bid to get people to sign up, they have a contest for winning a free KitchenAid stand mixer -- all determined by whether or not you have the appropriate sticker to put on your entry form. The sticker on my envelope says "FREE STAND MIXER". Sounds ( Read more... )

Maybe it's a wooden spoon with a stand.

I might have suspected that, but they actually mention KitchenAid stand mixer, and show a picture of it.

Is it the good kind of kitchenaid or the crummy one? The crummy one has the bowl lift up and down and the good one has the motor attachment swivel to go up.

It is a "lift bowl", but why is a "lift bowl" the crummy one?

I know that the old Hobart models are much better, but that was back before KitchenAid brand was sold back in the 80s.

Well, I haven't actually USED one but when I was playing with it at the department store, it seemed like it would be way harder to scrape the bowl and do other machinations needed while mixing. I bought the slightly smaller one that has the swivel arrangement.

I've got a 5qt lift-up one. I just stop the mixer, drop the bowl, and can scrape fairly well. There is now a third party beater that is supposed to take care of the scraping part anyway. I haven't gotten one yet (not sure if I will, as I don't really mind doing the scraping).

I am looking into getting the new spiral dough hook. They are supposed to work much better than the old "C" hooks.

I think you give the marketeers too much credit. "People" love putting "quotation marks" where they don't "belong".

I bet there's no hidden meaning. Just too much love of quotation marks.

They'll do something else with your sticker/entry to see if you're a "winner".

You're probably right. I just love the thought of them using quotes in a proper manner -- maybe some lawyer said that if we do it this way, then we can't be sued.

I'd bet those quotes were used with malice aforethought.

That was kind of my cynical point of view as well.
