Completely with you on the try before you buy idea. I do that with most things, and like you I buy some and reject others. I believe in the honor system, so I also license software that isn't crippled or time restricted if I choose to continue using it.
Many people now expect all software to be free - the Open Source projects have fostered that idea. And I do download a lot of free software, such as Open Office.
I like the engineering of the iTouch, but I've never really adopted a PDA of any kind. Phone numbers are in my phone, and tunes are on my five year old Dell Jukebox. That's about as much technology as I need.
As Dan points out: the thing works well and is made well. The apps are generally dirt cheap so you lose a dollar or two if you don't like it. The pricier ones I do research on and, err on the side of not buying if I have doubts. The App Store could be a lot better in this regard as well as the infamous approval process. But now that Apple will be allowing upselling we may see some changes in the try/buy equation. What hasn't changed is that Apple still disallows time limited trial software.
