Title: Hachi's Story
Characters: BLAST, TRAPNEST, Hachi, Misato
Rating: Gen
Warning: Character death
Summary: When Hachi dies, BLAST and TRAPNEST finally reunite in a way.
Author's notes: Dedicated to the chat gang. You know who you are.

Nana always thought she'd go first. She was the one who smoked like a chimney, never bothered to eat fruits or vegetables, or sleep properly. Hell, any one of the other members of BLAST or TRAPNEST were prime candidates for leaving before their time. Jealousy, rough lifestyles, professional rivalry, even Nana and Takumi's hatred of each other ... No one knew what their tomorrow would actually be like, though some of them hoped.

Hachi always tried to go to bed by midnight whenever possible, and made salads so that both of them would get their daily intakes of fruits and vegetables. Hachi didn't smoke, and only drank when everyone else was around. Hachi cleaned, Hachi fussed, and everyone took care of her and made sure she was always happy and smiling. Even when the troubles of life and the pitfalls of stardom got to be too much, she was always, always their sweet and loving Hachi, their mascot, and their biggest fan.

So when Hachi passed away that summer of lung cancer, Nana was both surprised and not to find herself bereft of direction.

She wasn't the only one. Nobu surpassed expectations by maintaining a calm facade, but he grew thinner and paler. He quit smoking the same day he heard the news, as did the rest of BLAST. Yasu was not a great talker by any stretch of the imagination, but now he was downright tacticurn. Shin clung tightly to Reira at night, silent tears that incited Reira's jealousy and yet at the same time caused her to draw the younger boy closer. Nana thought if Hachi saw Misato-chan sobbing her heart out at the news, kind-hearted Hachi would have hugged the other girl. To think Hachi had been jealous when she'd first met Misato.

Even Takumi, the heartless bastard, disappeared for a month. TRAPNEST released a single dedicated to her. He came back to much-publicized (against his wishes) fanfare, and Search magazine made a big deal of his romantic dedication. Fans of both groups debated and argued over who Hachi was, and what her influence was on the two bands. Nana cursed him for profiting from Hachi's demise, and told him to stick his head where the sun didn't shine. Everyone else understood Nana was blaming herself, but even Ren didn't know what to do.

In the end, it was Nana's idea for BLAST to sing a tribute to Hachi. There wasn't a dry eye at the memorial service. One year later, though Nana still couldn't stand Takumi, they dedicated a joint concert to her. The annual Hachi Memorial Concert, proceeds donated to the fight against lung cancer, became one of the most famous musical events in Japan, and later the world.

And in every program, every year, Hachi still smiles out at concertgoers from the front inside cover.

The End
