Atobe eyed the hamster through the glass panels of its cage. It sniffed, nose wiggling in the air, and looked at Atobe with large black eyes.
"Poor beast," Atobe mused. "You have lost all freedom to come and go as you please in return for such paltry food and housing. Your continued existence is at the whim and fancy of others such as myself. How do you bear it?"
He lifted the lid of the cage. With a twitch and a sudden burst of movement, the hamster fled, hiding in its little plastic kennel. Atobe could now see only the top of one of the wretched creature's white whiskers, quivering as its unfortunate owner surely was certainly doing, trying to remain unseen.
"Quite so," Atobe murmured, dropping the seeds he had been holding into the cage, and closing the lid. He patted it lightly. "Quite so."
